Our betting expert shares his two top totals NHL picks for Saturday. Join us in reading this compelling preview article that features totals in games between Detroit/Montreal and Buffalo/Tampa Bay.

Red Wings vs. Canadiens 7:05 PM ET
In all likelihood we’ll see Peter Mrazek between the pipes for Detroit tonight, due to Jimmy Howard playing in last night’s 5-3 home loss to Carolina. Mrazek was brilliant in his only start this year at Carolina, stopping 44 of 47 shots on goal during a 4-3 win. Montreal is coming off a 3-0 home win over the Rangers on Thursday.

Carey Price has picked up right where he left off last season. In four starts this year, Price has a 1.25 GAA, excellent .957 save percentage, and posted shutout. Montreal has allowed just 6 goals during their first five games of the year.

Any team (Montreal) playing in the first half of the season, coming off a home win by 3 goals or more, and both teams have a winning percentage of .700 or better, resulted in that team going 44-17 (72.1%) under the total since 1996.

These teams have combined to go 4-for-31 (12.9%) on the power play thus far. Contrarily, they’ve both been excellent on the penalty kill, allowing opponents to convert on a combined 4-for-33 (12.1%) of their extra man opportunities. I like this to be a low scoring affair, and one of my NHL picks on Saturday will be indicative of that sentiment.

NHL Picks: Play on the Red Wings and Canadiens under 5 (+110) at Heritage

Sabres vs. Lightning 7:05 PM ET
Buffalo’s #1 goaltender Robin Lehner went down with a knee injury during the second period of the Sabres season opener. Chad Johnson has been in goal ever since, and has posted a below average .892 save percentage. The Sabres power play has been very good in the early going. They’ve converted on a stellar 27.8% of their man power advantages. Unfortunately, their penalty killing has left a lot to be desired, allowing opponents to cash in on 36.4% of their power play chances.

Tampa Bay will be without their top two defensemen tonight. Both Nikita Nesterov (suspension) and Victor Hedman (lower body injury) won’t be available. Ben Bishop is off to a relatively poor start, evidenced by his less than impressive .896 save percentage in five starts. The Lightning penalty killing has been brutal so far. They’ve allowed the opposition to convert on 46.6% of their power play attempts.

According to current NHL odds, the total in this game is 5.5 across the board.

NHL Picks: Play on the Sabres and Lightning over 5.5 (+111) at Pinnacle
