Our resident NHL handicapper will examine the game on Friday between Montreal and New Jersey. His insightful betting preview article on this contest will be focusing on the total, and will culminate with a selection in that regard.

Canadiens in Jersey for Friday Clash with Devils
New Jersey Devils will entertain the Montreal Canadiens on Friday at 7:05 PM ET. According to the NHL betting odds at BetOnline, Montreal is a -150 money line favorite, and the posted total is 5.0. These teams have met twice this season, and Montreal won each game by scores of 4-2 and 6-2. Both of those contests went over the total.

Habs vie for #1 Seed in the East and Atlantic Division Title
The Montreal Canadiens are coming off a 5-4 overtime shootout loss at home last night to the Washington Capitals. Montreal is now 1-4 in their previous five games versus the money line. The Canadiens head into today with a one point lead over Tampa Bay for the lead in the Atlantic Division, and they possess one game in hand on the Lightning. They also trail the New York Rangers by two points for the overall lead in the Eastern Conference.

Tokarski on the spot for Montreal
Dustin Tokarski will be called upon today to hold down the fort in goal versus the Devils. Carey Price was between the pipes in Thursday’s loss to Washington, and will be afforded the day off. Tokarski is 6-9 against the money line in fifteen starts this season with a .910 save percentage. However, it must be noted, Montreal has gone over the total in just three of eleven road games this season with Tokarski in goal.

Devils playing out the Proverbial String
The New Jersey Devils will enter tonight’s game riding a six game losing streak. During this futile stretch, New Jersey has scored two goals or less in each of those six contests. On a positive note, the Devils will be playing on three days of rest, and will be facing an opponent (Montreal) that played last night. Cory Schneider will be in goal for New Jersey on Friday barring something unforeseen. Schneider has been one of the few bright spots for the Devils this season. He’s posted a stellar .927 save percentage in sixty five starts.

Final Analysis
Montreal has seen just twelve of their thirty-games (31.6%) on the road this season go over the total. In their two previous meetings with the Devils this season they were facing backup goaltender Keith Kincaid on each occasion. They won’t be as fortunate tonight with Cory Schneider slated to start.

The New Jersey Devils have seen only seven of their thirty-nine games (17.9%) at home this season go over the total. They’ve failed to go over the total in any of their last ten games overall, and have surpassed the number in just four of their previous thirty-one games.

I like this game to be a low scoring affair, and that’s the direction I’m headed in when making one of my NHL picks on Friday.

NHL Pick: Play on Montreal and New Jersey to go under the total of 5.0 at BetOnline.
