Sometimes we win so much I don’t understand why our daily play of the day and ‘Ice Guys’ show isn’t plastered all over the front page of the SBR web site but we’ll take what we can get and remember NFL is king. I love when football season comes because I know that Saturday and Sunday will feature NHL lines that you scratch your head about but instead of thinking the books “know something” it’s really an indication that they couldn’t care less about making sharp NHL numbers. Followers of my daily NHL column crushed the books last night when someone thought it would be a great idea to make the Toronto Maple Leafs a tiny road favorite against Montreal. The status of Auston Mathews was unknown so the books played it safe, posting a small number instead of being able to read between the lines when Mike Babcock talked of Mathews status. Then there is the little caveat of it didn’t matter if he played because Toronto is still an easy -115 to -120 road favorite without him. Anyway, the Leafs crushed the Habs 6-0 and my readers added to their bankroll.

On to sunny California.

First, some unscientific handicapping. The Ducks will be honoring Teemu Selanne and Paul Kariya for their Hall of Fame induction before the game. I don’t have any concrete numbers to back this up but I’ve been doing this long enough to know that more times than not, the home team doesn’t play well when there is a ceremony of any kind. Start tracking this trend and you’ll be amazed how poorly the host of these presentations perform. As this equates to our wager tonight, the Ducks are already an unreliable team offensively and the Panthers, although much more up tempo and dangerous than people give them credit for, are playing their third cross country game in four nights. So far, the Panthers have managed just two goals in the first two game and both of those were in a 2-0 shutout of the Sharks on Thursday. This is also the last game on the West Coast for Bob Boughner’s team so it’s fair to conclude that there might be more of a focus on their upcoming home games against Toronto and Chicago.

The Panthers were shutout 4-0 last night in Los Angeles mostly because they were willing to go in the dirty areas to win puck battles. I’m not going to back an OVER with a team that is questioning their own desire against another that hasn’t been offensively consistent all season.

From a trend perspective, the UNDER is 13-6-2 when the Panthers are playing their third game in four nights.

Let’s cash yet another winner!
