Thursday will be the first busy day in the NHL since the Olympic break as 12 teams are in action. We’ve got the night covered with individual previews of the Toronto Maple Leafs-New York Islanders and the Detroit Red Wings-Ottawa Senators, and we’ll have a look at three more games below to add to your NHL picks.
The Maple Leafs have been an over machine and I expect that to continue on Thursday when they visit the New York Islanders. The Isles have given up an average of 3.9 goals per game in their last eight while Toronto allows more shots on net than any other team in the NHL.
These two teams played to a 5-2 result the first time they met this season and I expect a similar scoreline on Thursday.

Tampa Bay Lightning vs. Nashville Predators
Getting Tampa Bay as an underdog for my sports picks is an intriguing proposition. Nashville has been in nose-dive mode since the start of 2014 and has lost five of seven. Their goaltending has been awful as they’ve allowed an average of 3.9 goals per game in that stretch. They are a conservative team who isn’t built to play in shootouts.
Although they are at home, I’ll go against them with Tampa Bay, who is the far superior team for our NHL picks.

Phoenix Coyotes vs. Winnipeg Jets
The Jets make plenty of sense to me here as they were clearly the better of the two teams before the break. They’ve won nine of 13 games since head coach Paul Maurice took over and they’ve been very competitive. As for the Coyotes, they did enter the break on a 2-2-0 spell but prior to that’s part of a greater sample where they have won just nine of 27 games. The Coyotes have dropped eight of their last nine road games.
The Jets deserve more respect than this, so given the cheap price tag on the NHL odds, I’ll lay the juice.
