NHL Thursday Night in the Cathedral of Hockey
The Canadiens and Islanders will have at it on Thursday night. The opening faceoff at the Bell Centre in Montreal is slated for 7:35 PM ET. The NHL odds at 5Dimes has Montreal as a -119 money line favorite, and the posted total is 5.5. Thursday will be the first meeting of the season between these teams. Montreal swept the head-to-head series against the Islanders a season ago by winning all three encounters.

Extra Boost for Islanders
The New York Islanders will welcome the return of their star center John Tavares for tonight’s game. Tavares has missed each of the Islanders past three games due to illness. In the first ten games of the season, Tavares has 5 goals and 6 assists for 11 points. The Islanders went 1-2 in the games Tavares missed, but are coming off a 2-1 win over New Jersey on Tuesday. They’ve gone 5-0-1 under in their last six games. Jaroslav Halak is slated to be in goal on Thursday against Montreal. Halak has a stellar .936 save percentage in six starts this season, posted two shutouts, and sports a miniscule 1.65 GAA.

Habs First Home Loss
After opening the season with five consecutive wins at the Belle Center, Montreal sustained a 2-1 home loss in overtime to Ottawa on Tuesday. They certainly didn’t go down easily, amassing 37 shots on goal in defeat, and were stonewalled by Ottawa goaltender Craig Anderson. The Canadiens are averaging a robust 3.6 goals per game, and Tuesday was just the second time the last seven contests in which they failed to score at least three times. Michael Condon will once again be in goal tonight. Condon has filled in admirably for the injured Carey Price. The youngster has gone 4-1 in five starts with an excellent .941 save percentage.

Final Analysis and Pick
According to The Greek, we’ve seen a reverse money line move in this game. The opening money line was -140, and despite over 57% of the wagers made being placed on Montreal, the number has now dropped to -119. The sharp money has certainly gone on the Islanders, and I’m going to concur for one of my NHL picks on Thursday.
