This Dallas Stars-Ottawa Senators series has produced eight 'overs' in the last 10 meetings, but handicapper Dana Lane explains why we're going to cash an 'under' ticket tonight between the two.

2016-2017 NHL Pick Record:  71-59  (+14.67 Units)

On Tuesday, my readers enjoyed another plus money winner as the New York Islanders and Edmonton Oilers were kind enough to cash our ‘under’ 5.5 ticket, and if you watched Tuesday's "PuckHeads" video then you would have cashed two additional winners -- making it six straight shows that we’ve given out free money.

Thursday, we head to the American Airlines Center in Dallas, as the Stars host the Senators, to get a betting ticket on the generous total of six, shaded the ‘under’ -109,  being the best number I can find on NHL boards.

The last we saw of Coach Lindy Ruff’s Dallas Stars team, it scored a 4-2 road victory over the Washington Capitals, which had to be leaving the Dallas faithful shaking their head about what should have been this season.  The reality is that the Stars will not parlay that effort into another solid offensive performance because that’s what bad teams do (or don't do).  They are inspired to play the big-name teams and then let down against teams they should have an easier time handling.

Ruff is not under contract for next season, and there is already media speculation on how the 2017-18 team should be constructed.  Why is that significant for a team that is technically still in a race for the last wild card? Because when the local media, a group that spends time with this team on a daily basis, starts to look toward next season, I’m comfortable in thinking that’s a reflection of the organization's overall demeanor.  I don’t see any 2017-18 speculation coming from the Pittsburgh Penguins. Yes, the Stars can get up for a big game, but tonight you’ll see a low-scoring game to reflect the inconsistent team that Dallas has been all season.

The often-overlooked Senators are no joke on the road at 17-12-0 in addition to winning seven of their last 10. The fact that Dallas played so well against the Capitals will give Ottawa a wake-up call in case the Sens were thinking they could sleepwalk through this game. In the end, Dallas won’t be as crisp as we last saw against one of the leagues above average defensive teams. That's why we lean 'under' on our NHL picks.
