The Sharks find themselves as a -135 favorite on the NHL betting lines for Thursday’s matchup against the Boston Bruins, but this handicapper is interested in betting the total for best value.

The Boston Bruins Can Win Because…
The Sharks have been struggling. Sure, they’ve won two straight but prior to that, they had lost four straight with three of those games coming at home. San Jose is a very streaky team and one that’s quite unreliable. Their head coach is on the hot seat, their players are on the trade block and they could be ready to break this thing down for parts. Is this the type of team you want to be laying juice with?

The Bruins have struggled recently to score but their defense is still strong and keeping them in games. Goaltender Tuukka Rask has won all three of his career starts against the San Jose Sharks while posting a 1.33 GAA. He should have an easier time of things with the Sharks missing their leading scorer, Logan Couture, who is questionable for this one. Rask gave up three goals in the loss to Anaheim on Monday but he was fantastic in November, posting a .935 save percentage and a 1.90 GAA. He’ll keep the Bruins in the game, which is why they’re worth a look as a road dog in NHL betting odds.

The San Jose Sharks Can Win Because…
The Bruins are a mess right now. They’re not scoring many goals these days as they’ve only scored more than two goals twice in their last 10 outings. Since November 12th, the Bruins have averaged the fewest goals per game in the NHL with just 1.50, which is startling. They’ve also been shut out twice in their last five games after being blanked just once in all of their games before that.

The Bruins were a pretty good road team last season but that hasn’t been the case this year. They’re 5-6-0 on the road overall but they’ve actually lost four of their last five away games. This will be their third stop on a four-game west coast road trip and it’s their third game in four nights. This just isn’t the ideal spot for the Bruins. Take the Sharks with your NHL picks.

The Bruins just aren’t right these days as they’re having a tough time scoring goals. Overall, they’ve now dropped four of their last five games. The Sharks are probably the best choice on the side simply because they’re at home and the Bruins have had a rough road schedule this week. However, San Jose has not been a reliable bet this year, so they are hard to trust. Instead, we’ll look for an under as the Sharks might be without leading scorer Logan Couture while the Bruins offense hasn’t done much over the last month. Go under with your NHL picks.
