Colorado Avalanche’s bid for a wild-card playoff spot continues in earnest when they take on the Minnesota Wild tonight. Join us as we breakdown this clash and serve up NHL picks.

Western Conference Wild-Card Race
Colorado Avalanche currently occupy the second wildcard spot in the Western Conference with a 32-28-4 mark and 68 points, but the Minnesota Wild are nipping at their heels, just two points shy with a 28-25-10 mark. This sets up a rather intriguing showdown tonight at the Xcel Energy Center. Across sports betting platforms, the Wild enter as the significant home faves, trading anywhere from -158 to -165 to win outright, but the Avalanche will be hoping to defy those NHL odds boards. Question is whether they’ll accomplish the feat.

Avalanche (32-28-4)
Colorado is coming off a loss to the Detroit Red Wings, a 5-3 blowout at home that could prove costly when the premium on winning couldn’t be any greater in the pursuit of a wild-card berth. The loss has the Avalanche slipping to a 5-5-0 record in their last ten games and marks their second loss in the last three games to top OVER 5 goals in NHL betting (lost to Vancouver Canucks a week prior 5-1 at Rogers Arena).

Indeed, the loss to the Canucks marks their last outing in the league and it was an unmemorable one, to say the least, but most galling is their inconsistency on the road of late. Although they’ve won three of their last five outings, those recent losses were inexplicably horrible and lopsided – 5-1 to Canucks and 4-1 to Sabres. Overall, the Avalanche are 14-14-4 at home but 18-14-0 on the road.

Wild (28-25-10)
Minnesota Wild are coming off a 3-1 win over the Florida Panthers at home on Sunday, a pivotal win that has them improving to 5-5-0 and closing the gap on Colorado in the race for a wild-card spot. Importantly, it saw them snap a dispiriting three-game losing streak, which could augur well as they attempt to continue the momentum tonight.

A win over the high-flying Florida Panthers is nothing to sniff at, nor for that matter is a 6-1 win over defending champions Chicago Blackhawks, which they carved out on February 21 at the Xcel Energy Center before regressing behind the three-game losing streak. In fact, the win over the Blackhawks capped a four-game winning streak that included outscoring their opponents 21-8.

Clearly, the Wild can light up when the fancy takes them. One of the reasons why they’ve been mired in the doldrums of late is a string of injuries so some room for consideration must be given to that. Happily, players are returning to the fold and that has to give the Wild a boost for this game. The Wild are 16-11-4 at home this season.

NHL Betting Verdict
Very little separates this pair in the Western Conference standings, not to mention in recent form as both are 5-5-0 in the last ten games ahead of this clash. That the Wild are coming off a signature win over the Panthers at home, however, does tip the scale slightly in their favour. That and home advantage where they’ve been mostly good this season. The Wild opened the season with a 5-4 win over the Avalanche. They went on to beat them in Colorado 3-0 before slipping to a 2-1 loss in overtime immediately afterwards. The Wild have the 2-1 edge over Colorado and we quite fancy them to take the 3-1 edge with a big win tonight. My NHL pick is the Wild as the home faves at -158.
