The Dallas Stars and Chicago Blackhawks will butt heads for the third time this season on Sunday. Hawks are a huge favorite on the NHL betting lines for this matchup but will they cash in?
The Dallas Stars Can Win Because…
They’re playing their best hockey of the season. The Stars were expected to be a playoff contender at the beginning of the year but that never came to fruition in October and November. However, they flipped the switch in December and have been playing like a very cohesive unit. The Stars have won eight of their last nine games and their offense is cooking. In those seven wins, they have scored an average of 4.25 goals per game.
Although the Stars are on the road for this one, it should affect them too much as they’ve been a stronger road team than home team this season. They’ve won four straight away games and are 9-7-0 on the road. That’s not great but still better than their home record where they have just nine wins in 21 games.
NHL odds have the Stars as a huge dog in this spot but they’re playing so well right now that you might want to consider taking a shot with them here. The Blackhawks are coming off a loss and have just three wins in their last six, so the momentum is clearly with Dallas.
The Chicago Blackhawks Can Win Because…
They’re coming off a loss and should be focused to take care of business here. The Blackhawks lost 3-2 in the Winter Classic and have had a tough time over the last couple of weeks. However, even though they’ve lost three times, they lost to three teams that are pretty hot: Washington, Winnipeg and Columbus. Moreover, two of the losses were on the road. At home, the Blackhawks are 13-4-1 and are pretty tough to beat.
There should also be a difference in freshness between the teams as the Stars will be in a back-to-back situation after playing Minnesota at home last night. That’s a quick turnaround for them. As for the Blackhawks, they’ve been off since Thursday and will be rested for this game. They’re the smarter choice for your NHL picks.
The Stars are a huge dog on this spot and it’s pretty easy to see why. The Blackhawks are simply that much of a better team. Beyond that, the Stars are just 2-10 versus the division this season.
With so much juice, though, I’ll take a shot with the over. The Stars have played better of late but it’s not because of their goaltending. They gave up 2.83 goals per game in December, which was the 10th-worst number. However, their offense has done well with 3.08 goals per game. Because of those trends, look for this to be a higher scoring affair and for us to get the over here.
