The first of two transition days begin in Stanley Cup playoffs, as three contests change locations for Game 3 of a series. Often this determines the outcome, so join us in finding the best NHL Picks for the day.

With yesterday's results, favorites are now 9-6, -0.10 units with two large surprises, as the New York Rangers and San Jose won on the road, though this is nothing new for the Sharks now at 30-14 SU. I also am 9-6 with a small profit from taking a few underdogs and as opposed to many handicappers, I am not afraid to admit mistakes because if read my choice of Pittsburgh yesterday, I was mentally hedging about taking the Rangers, but did not. Good teaching point for myself and officially I am 25-13 +8.41 since playoffs started last year (5-1 in 2016) in the postseason.

The St. Louis at Chicago contest is in another write-up here at but here my other three choices for NHL picks for today.

Desperation Serves Detroit in Game 3
The Red Wings were tied with Tampa Bay in the third period of both games and lost each time, being thoroughly unable to slow the Lightning top line of Alex Killorn, Tyler Johnson and Nikita Kucherov, who has dominated the first two games and scored seven of their eight goals and has 15 points.

Though it was fun to watch old school fighting at the end Game 2, it pointed to Detroit's lack of poise and discipline. While they have only given up one power play goal, Tampa Bay's had 11 chances.

The NHL odds at Heritage have them as -122 home favorites and everyone expects the Red Wings to be ultra physical with Tampa Bay's No.1 line at Joe Louis Arena. Detroit has now lost four in a row, but those were on the road and since the All-Star break they are 11-4 SU at the Joe. The Red Wings just do not have as many good players as the Lightning, but I expect max effort from the Wings who are 10-2 at home playing with double revenge and they take this one.

Florida in Game 3 Nail-Biter
Choosing between Florida and the New York Islanders in Game 3 is an arduous choice. When the Panthers eliminated their mistakes from Game 1, they won Friday. Can Florida play another clean game and find ways to keep the Isles John Tavares off the score-sheet while kick-starting Jaromir Jagr?

For both clubs this will be third confrontation in four days. New York is the more injury-riddled team, but will have crowd edge and this is first playoff game at the Barclay's Center for the Islanders, which will help get the juices flowing.

Like the above series, these next two games look like a split and it is just a matter of the order. I will lean with the Panthers who are 17-8 after playing in contest where four or less goals were scored and almost certainly will play tonight's loser in Game 4.

Ducks Square Series with Nashville
After playing 82 games and fighting to the last day of the regular season to win the Pacific Division, even with four days off, Anaheim was flat and surrendered home ice advantage in three periods after working for months to achieve.

Nashville played with more spirit in the 3-2 upset and have their first postseason series lead of any kind in four years. The Predators were pesky on defense, however, Anaheim was also careless with the puck and had stunning 20 giveaways. If Nashville wants to head home 2-0, they will have to do far better work in the faceoff department, where they were dominated 42-27.

The Ducks do have developing injury problems both with forwards and blue-liners and have lost two straight to the Preds. Sportsbooks have established Anaheim as a -160 home favorite and since they are 41-16 at the Honda Center revenging two straight losses where opponent scored three or more goals, expect the Ducks to even the series.
