The St. Louis Blues whistle into Rogers Arena to face the Vancouver Canucks with puck drop scheduled for 10:00 ET/7:00 PT

It’s great to wake up every morning and see that the public has presented you with a better line than the opening number. That’s the case with tonight’s clash with the opening number of 5.5 -130 (UNDER) to a more manageable -120 (UNDER) at 5Dimes and Heritage. The OVER has been pounded by the public and professionals according to the SBR odds page where over 97% of all tickets are backing this to fly past the total of 5.5.

Can’t jump on a side here with St. Louis being the only side but I’m not willing to lay over -130 on the road and I’m not going to back the Canucks who have lost seven of their last eight.

In those eight games, the Canucks have managed just 19 goals (2.38 per game). In fact, if you take out their last games against San Jose and Montreal, the Canucks have scored a total of 20 goals in the other 6 games. Vancouver is 28th in goals per game (2.69). There has been a little improvement in the Month of December in terms of ranking as other teams have fallen harder but the Canucks average goals per game have dropped this month to 2.22. Yes, I know, the Canucks have scored 10 goals in their last three games but part of the reason why a team is struggling is that they’re inconsistent. I need a bigger sample size similar to the one that tells me that Vancouver is unreliable on the offensive side, especially when 9 of those goals came in two games.

Part of the problem for Vancouver is their injuries. Bo Horvat fractured his ankle earlier this month, Chris Tanev has a strained groin, and Brock Boeser continues to battle a foot injury.

I also like when coaches speak publicly about certain areas that need improvement as Travis Green did this week. Although he won’t lay the blame on anyone specifically, he did say that they need to play better on the defensive end. That’s a clear message to the locker room. I expect improvement today.

On the flip side, the St. Louis Blues are also in the middle of a slump dropping five of their last six. During that stretch their offensive numbers are even worse, mustering just 6 goals in 6 games. Defensively they have been solid allowing just 18 goals in their last 9 games. St. Louis has played seven games that have fallen under the TOTAL. Their recent road form shows the Blues have netted three goals in three games.

Like Vancouver, injuries have plagued the Blues this season. Jaden Schwartz suffered an ankle injury which has further depleted the left side and their defensive core depth is in question with an injury to Carl Gunnarsson.
