Colorado Avalanche vs Arizona Coyotes

With tonight’s game representing the league’s 29th and 30th ranked teams, chances are it’s not going to make anybody’s list of must watch television but I do think the Colorado Avalanche, Arizona Coyotes match-up provides us with a chance to jump on a plus money ‘under’ and it looks pretty easy.

The Colorado Avalanche are the NHL’s worst offensive team averaging just 1.96 goals per game along with just 27.8 shots per game (27th). The Arizona Coyotes are 27th in goals per game (2.37) with just 28.2 shots per game (25th).  Saturday the Avalanche managed just 16 shots on goals in a 4-2 loss to the Ottawa Senators. Statistically speaking this game shouldn’t come anywhere near the total.

The number opened at 5, shaded to the ‘over’ -125.  We didn’t see any early movement when the number was first posted but with over 91% of the morning tickets on the ‘over’ it pushed the line to -135.

You would think Colorado would find some success against other bad teams, not so fast. The Av’s are 0-5 in their last five road games against teams with a losing home record and have dropped 15 of their last 17 games against the Pacific Division.  The ‘under’ is 7-3-1 in Colorado’s last 11 games when playing their fourth game in six days.

Even the above average players on the Avalanche are going stone cold.  Matt Duchene, who had 30 goals last season, has no points in the teams last 10 games and just 2 points in his last 24 games. Things have gotten so bad that Duchene was demoted to the third line in Saturday’s loss to Ottawa. It’s beyond comprehension why Head Coach Jared Bednar thought this would be an effective way to jumpstart his team.  Dropping your most gifted offensive player will not push him out of his slump with a decrease in ice time. I’m guessing Bednar isn’t winning over many players in the locker room.

The Coyotes are matching those numbers with a 0-5 mark in their last five games coming off a win. Calvin Pickard will start in goal for the Avalanche, opposed by Mike Smith for the Coyotes.
