Our NHL consultant examines Monday’s game between San Jose and Ottawa in this betting preview article. Can Ottawa remain on the torrid winning pace they’re currently on? Will the fading Sharks regroup to make one final playoff push? Get those answers and his money line selection on this game.

Sharks at the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa
The red-hot Ottawa Senators will host the San Jose Sharks on Monday at 7:35 PM ET. According to the NHL betting odds at Bookmaker, Ottawa is a -140 money line favorite, and the posted total is 5.5. This will be the second meeting of the season between these teams, and Ottawa took the first encounter in San Jose by the score of 4-2.

Fading Playoff Hopes
The San Jose Sharks have virtually played themselves out of a possible playoff spot over the past six weeks. They’re 1-3 in their last four, and 8-14 in the last twenty-two games. The Sharks are currently nine points out of a playoff spot, and have just nine games left to play in the 2014-2015 NHL campaign. San Jose has scored two goals or less in six of their previous seven games, and that’s hardly a recipe for winning. Today will be their fourth of a seven game in thirteen day road trip. On some positive notes, the Sharks are 5-3 against the money line in their last eight games on the road, and have gone 8-1 on the road this season after losing three of its previous four.

Sizzling Senators
Ottawa enters today winners of six in a row, nine of the last ten, and fourteen of their previous sixteen games. When combining those impressive streaks with the recent nose dive by the Boston Bruins, Ottawa has catapulted themselves into a serious playoff contender. As a matter of fact, currently they’re just one point behind the Bruins for the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference, and have two games in hand on Boston. The Senators have won seven of their previous eight at home, and are averaging a robust 4.0 goals per game in their last eleven contests at the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa.

Final Analysis
These are two teams clearly headed in opposite directions. With so much at stake in terms of the playoff race pertaining to Ottawa, imagining them stubbing their toe at this juncture and especially so on home ice seems improbable. I’m siding with the money line home favorite in this spot for one of my NHL picks on Monday.
