The Senators are one of three teams fighting for the eighth & final two playoff spots in the East entering the last day of the regular season. They’re a road favorite on NHL odds lines against Flyers.

The Ottawa Senators Can Win Because…
They’ve been one of the best teams in the NHL over the last couple of months, which is why NHL betting odds placed them as a -140 road favorite for this matchup. The Senators have won 20 of their last 26 games and have been nearly unbeatable. Since calling up goaltender Andrew Hammond, they have been on fire. The goaltender was a middling player in the minors yet has gone 19-1-2 in his 22 NHL starts this season. He’s been nearly untouchable, posting a 1.76 GAA in that time. He’s won five of his last six starts while posting a 1.58 GAA.

The Flyers have been showing a pulse of late but they’re really just beating up on struggling teams like the Penguins and Islanders. And even with those wins, the Flyers have still lost seven of their last 11 games and 12 of 17. Sure, they are better at home than they are on the road but they also just lost at home 3-1 to the lousy Carolina Hurricanes. The fact that the Senators are favored in this spot tells you all you need to know. The Flyers are just playing out the string while the Sens are fighting for their playoff lives. They’re not going to leave anything to chance; expect them to win early on Saturday.

The Philadelphia Flyers Can Win Because…
They’ve been a respectable team down the stretch of the season. Yes, they’re coming off a loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday but they are still 4-1-2 in their last seven games. They have some quality of wins of late, including against two teams that are comparable to the Sens in terms of the standings. The Flyers have beat the Penguins twice and the Isles once over the last couple of weeks.

Philadelphia has been a competent team at home all season long. They’ve won four of six on their home ice and are 23-17 on their home-ice this season. As vulnerable as they are at home, they are tough to beat at home. Don’t expect the Flyers to lay down in this one. They’ll make sure the Sens have to earn this one.

The Sens have been virtually unstoppable for the last couple of months as they’ve made a hard-charging, inspiring push to the playoffs. And now that they’re right on the cusp of it, don’t expect them to slow up. They’ve got the edge in net here as well as the edge in momentum and motivation. That should be enough to propel them to a win.

If you’re looking at totals for your NHL picks, I’d recommend the under. With Hammond playing well and Steve Mason also standing out at the other end, we should see a low-scoring affair in this one.
