The Boston Bruins and Ottawa Senators have a few things in common entering Thursday's tilt at TD Garden (7 p.m. ET, ESPN+).

Jostling for playoff positioning, the Sens and Bruins are tied on 52 points. They also enter proceedings with the same sour taste after rancid displays the last time out, with the Sens losing 5-0 in the Big Apple and the Bruins falling 5-1 in New Jersey to the Devils.

I can't wait to see the desperation ooze from two playoff-hungry teams. For the record, I like the Bruins to win this game. They're the third-hottest team on home ice since Dec. 1, taking 17 from 20 points. And, somewhat illogically, they're 4-0-1 on the second night of back-to-back encounters.

Plus, the Senators won both previous meetings this season, one in overtime and the other in a shootout. Boston will be hellbent on getting one back.

While I have every intention of playing that pick, I'm focusing on Under 5.5 goals. 

Sens' dominant road defense

The Sens have the fifth-best defense in hostile environments, allowing just 2.69 goals per game on the road.

Their anemic offense in enemy barns, which ranks 27th in goals per game (2.42), further strengthens the Under. The Sens don't allow many chances, conceding the fourth-fewest expected goals against (83.12), and nine of the previous 10 on their travels had six or fewer goals.

The last time these teams met, goals poured like Guinness on St. Patrick's Day. The Sens prevailed 6-5 in a shootout. For me, it's even more reason to back the Under.

Both teams will enter the contest with a heightened focus on mitigating errors and playing sound defensive hockey, especially after conceding five each in their last game. Boston has allowed 2.40 goals against during its current 8-1-1 stretch at home. I expect that stingy defensive record to permeate into Thursday's tilt.
