The Buffalo Sabres roll into Detroit with the Wings comfortably in the middle of a five game home stand. Detroit has pulled themselves up over the .500 mark after an offensive explosion over the Calgary Flames Wednesday (8-2). The Sabres haven’t been able to find the win column much this season but their four goal effort in a 5-4 loss to the Penguins, Tuesday, has inspired the public to grab the ‘over’ according the SBR odds page. We see a typical reaction by the ‘squares’ who have mostly taken both of these teams last performance and added 9+10 and figured 19/2 was way more than the 5.5 total . Most likely, this simple math has led to over 60% of the total wagers coming in on the ‘over’. Maybe if I put it this way to you you’ll understand my general rules of thinking. Remember when you were in school and you were learning or sleeping through the part of algebra that explained how two negatives make a positive? It the same way I want you to think about wagering, not blindly, but as a general path. To make it more simplistic, if you’ve seen two team do the same thing, like score 12 goals to put the game over the ‘total’, then don’t assume when you combine them together when they face each other that you’ll receive the same result because two positives equal a negative or an opposite result. Get it?

A side note to tonight’s game came down this morning when the league announced that Luke Witkowski will receive a 10 suspension after coming back onto the ice after being escorted off once. Trevor Daly left the Flames game with an upper body injury. Head Coach Jeff Blashill said Daly is day to day. He has not been ruled out for tonight’s game. The reason for emphasis on this the Wings are battling injuries that forced them to dress 11 forwards and 7 defensemen. They are struggling to find quality players and if that forces guys to play more minutes than normal that will force the Wings to slow the pace down in front of goaltender Jimmy Howard who has been playing well enough to shut down any offense which easily includes the league’s 30th ranked offense in Buffalo.

The other aspect of wagering that is valuable is listening to what coaches say and knowing how to filter their words to your advantage. Sabres coach Phil Housley has called out his team’s defensive effort which means that’s where their emphasis will be against the Wings.

Shop for the best number of the SBR odds page but I’m jumping all over the ‘under’ 5.5 tonight.
