I can't overstate the importance of Monday's contest in the nation's capital. If the Senators win, they'll be up five points on the sliding Red Wings with only one head-to-head contest remaining.
The critical nature of the bout is one of the primary reasons I expect a game with six goals or fewer. It would buck both teams' recent trend, with five of the last six Ottawa games seeing at least seven goals, including the previous four. Three of the last five Red Wings' games had seven goals or more.
While my prediction is going against the grain a bit, their previous two head-to-heads this season had three and five goals. Neither team can afford to play loose, and the Red Wings will be desperate to reinforce things defensively after allowing 21 goals in the last five games, nine of which came in the previous two.
While the Sens have scored more recently — 17 in the last four — they only scored eight in the previous five prior to that run, and are tied for the fifth-fewest per game (2.52) in the 29 contests since Dec. 22. Meanwhile, Detroit has mustered the eighth-fewest goals per game since Jan. 18 (2.63).
I expect a playoff-like tilt from a pair of desperate teams, with the Red Wings winning 3-2.
