The Red Wings have played a few exciting games to start their six-game road trip but the going is about to get much tougher in Los Angeles facing the Kings.
The Detroit Red Wings Can Win Because…
They’ve been very competitive of late. They’ve won two of three and the one loss was in a shootout in Anaheim last night. They’re playing everyone tough and that’s a good sign. The other factor that’s working in their favor is that their offense is on a roll. They’ve managed to score 13 goals in their last three games, which is a very healthy clip.
On the season, Detroit has fared pretty well against the Western Conference, winning 14 of 19 games. And the Red Wings have won seven of their last eight against teams with an overall losing record (Kings are currently 28-30). They’ve also won five of the last six meetings between the teams, so if you’re looking at taking a shot with the Red Wings as an NHL betting odds dog, the stats definitely suggest they can spring an upset.
The Los Angeles Kings Can Win Because…
They’re playing their best hockey of the season. More than that, the Stanley Cup champs are the best team in the NHL right now.
Los Angeles has won seven straight games entering Tuesday and have looked indomitable at times. Goaltender Jonathan Quick is playing very well right now as he’s giving up just five goals in his last four games. As for the offense, the Kings have averaged 3.6 goals per game during their winning streak and when these two factors are on their side, this is a team that’s going to be very tough to beat.
While the Red Wings offense has been effective on this road trip, their goaltending has been spotty. They’ve allowed 10 goals in their last two games and goaltender Jimmy Howard has struggled. It’s possible he gets the night off on Tuesday but he’s allowed 17 goals in his last five outings, which is subpar. It’s pretty clear the Kings have a pretty sizable advantage between the pipes.
The Kings are just a train of momentum these days and should be the fresher team. That’s why they’re the better play here.
The Red Wings have won two of three but one has to wonder how much they have left in the tank. They’ve gone into overtime each time – including last night in Anaheim, which could be particularly taxing. They are not only in a back-to-back situation but it’s their third game in four nights, all on the road.
This is a really tough situation to back the Red Wings with your NHL picks as it has “flat spot” written all over it. They’re tired, they’re on the west coast and they’re playing the best team in the NHL right now. Look for the Kings to win here and outclass a worn down team.
