We just keep on handing out winners as the Toronto Maple Leafs ended their losing streak last night against the San Jose Sharks. Readers of this column were all over the Mike Babcock’s team as were professional and the general public bettors. It took until Tyler Bozak’s shootout goal to give us the winner but they cash the same way no matter when they come.

Favorites went 7-4 last night with home favorites coming in at 7-1. The biggest surprise had to come when the Montreal Canadiens, at +164, took down the Tampa Bay Lightning behind Carey Price’s 44 saves, proving that there aren’t any ‘locks’ when it comes to wagering on any sport.

Home underdogs, getting +1.5, are still dominating with a 92-42 record (68.66%) but is that number more attractive than it really should be. Only one game falls under this category tonight with the Ottawa Senators (+1.5, -300) a home dog. The problem is we’re not going to lay -300 to get the goal and a half even if home dogs have a terrific win percentage. A loss would force us to win three games just to get our money back and four to secure a profit. 68% looks very impressive but when you’re required to win 75% just to re-coup one loss it puts that number in perspective.

For TOTAL bettors its incredible how even this season has been between OVER and UNDER. I think the general perception is that this has been a big OVER season but the reality is UNDERS have cashed one more game with a record of 304-303.

Tonight, we’re jumping on the Detroit Redwings to get the job done against the Florida Panthers.

Hear me out on this. Remember when I’ve talked from time to time about how players like to stick to a routine. I know this will be too deep but according to a psychology class, I took years back men don’t like to have their schedule altered. They get a plan in their head and then move forward until all is completed. I can tell you as a former baseball player I didn’t like it at when games were rained out. It took me out of my mental rhythm. The Florida Panthers game against the Boston Bruins was snowed out yesterday, cutting the Panthers road trip to four games. You can bet that this has thrown the team off a bit which is going to cause them to take some time to get settled in this one.

Even with everything normal the Wings have a superior power play unit that gives them a huge advantage. Detroit’s man advantage is clicking at 20%, good for 13th in the league. The Panthers are just 27th with a 15.6% success rate. Considering the Panthers are one of the leagues most penalized teams its reasonable to anticipate a big night from the Wings powerplay.
