Our NHL handicapping professional examines Monday’s game between the Flames & Islanders in this betting preview article. Go inside to receive his valuable insights in addition to a NHL pick.

Flames at the Barclays Center on Monday
The Islanders and Flames will meet on Monday night for their first of two regular season encounters. The opening faceoff at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn is slated for 7:05 PM ET. The Islanders won both of their games versus Calgary last season by identical 2-1 scores. Both teams will be playing their third game in four days on Monday. My are of focus in this game will be on the puck line. According to NHL odds at 5Dimes, the Islanders are -1.5 (+155).

Disappointing Start
After coming off a magical 2014-2015 NHL campaign, the Calgary Flames are a dismal 2-6 in their first eight games this season, and that includes 1-5 in its previous six. Calgary is coming off a poor effort last night against the Rangers during a 4-1 defeat at Madison Square Garden. Starting goaltender Jonas Hiller was pulled from last night’s contest after allowing 4 goals on just 21 Rangers shots on net. Joni Ortio came on in relief and stopped all 5 shots on goal he faced. Ortio will make his first start of the season on Monday, and he has a 2.52 GAA in fifteen career NHL starts. Calgary has allowed 4 goals or more in five of their eight games.

Isles with Momentum
The Islanders enter Monday’s contest having gone 5-1 in their last six games. They scored 3 goals or more in each of those six outings. My NHL special team efficiency ratings indicate the Islanders have a huge +19.8 edge over Calgary in tonight’s matchup. Jaroslav Halak is slated to be in goal for the Islanders today, and in his last three starts against Calgary compiled a superb 0.67 GAA.

Final Analysis
The Islanders are clearly the better than Calgary at this early stage. They’re averaging a robust 3.4 goals per game so far, and are facing a Flames team that’s allowing a sizable 3.9 goals per contest. The goaltending matchup tonight will also provide a substantial edge for the home side. I like the Islanders to win this game in decisive fashion for one of my NHL picks on Monday.

NHL Pick: Islanders -1.5 (+155) at 5Dimes
