The Rangers are trying to hold on to second place in the Metropolitan Division and the Penguins are desperately trying to hang on to the last wild card spot in the East. Get the NHL pick here.

Pittsburgh Penguins vs. N.Y. Rangers
The Penguins are going to find it just a little harder to make the playoffs this year as Evgeni Malkin is officially out for the rest of the regular season with an upper body injury. Malkin will be out 6-8 which means if Pittsburgh makes the playoffs they would have to go to the second round for a chance at a Malkin return. Pittsburgh has had a difficult time gaining momentum, in their last 8 games after a win the penguins are a horrible 1-7.

Malkin leaves a big hole in the offense as he has accounted for 57 points this season. This could be the first year Pittsburgh misses the postseason with Malkin on the roster. Nick Bonino will take over at center on the second line. He's a solid player so it should be a smooth transition considering the team is used to making Malkin related changes. He'll play between Phil Kessel and Carl Hagelin. In order to help solidify their playoff spot the penguins must win in New York, a place they have dropped five of their last six.

On the other side of the ice, the Rangers had key players return led by Rick Nash and Henrik Lundqvist. The Rangers coughed up a late lead to Detroit, Saturday, and despite Lundqvist 40 saves, including all 15 1st period shots, the Redwings escaped with a 3-2 overtime victory. Nash registered 17:12 of ice time while getting off two shots. I expect a stronger effort today from both. Nash seemed just a step slow in terms of speed and decision making. The Rangers have been fantastic the second day of back to back games.  In their last 84 games on no days rest the Rangers 57-27.

Betting Analysis
There is no doubt that the Rangers have gotten stronger offensively with the arrival of Eric Staal who has size, great hands, and a laser shot. He has made linemates, Viktor Stalberg and Oscar Lindberg undoubtedly better and gives the Rangers more depth. Staal by all accounts has worked hard and is an another leader in the locker room. Lindberg appears to be getting more physical as the season progresses. He seems to be finishing every check with a purpose.

Lundqvist and Marc-Andre Fleury are today's listed goaltenders  Lundqvist made 34 saves in a 3-0 shutout of Pittsburgh February 10th.

The Rangers have beaten Pittsburgh three of their last four games while receiving at least a point in six of the last seven meetings.

The Rangers own the leagues second best home record of 23-7-3 trailing only Washington.

If you're an 'under' bettor the Penguins against the Metropolitan Division has produced a 31-15-5 record over the last 51 meetings. Go for 'under' as your NHL pick against this game. Be sure to also visit the NHL odds board for the best totals and odds. @DanaLaneSports
