N.Y. Rangers vs Philadelphia Flyers

The Philadelphia Flyers have done a complete 180 since their 10 game winning streak that saw them in the thick of the Metro Division race. Since they've dropped six of seven games to fall 14 points behind the Columbus Blue Jackets for the division lead while hanging on to the last wild-card spot in the East.

Philadelphia is currently in the midst of a four-game losing streak and has lost six of seven overall. They were outscored 16-6 in their recent West Coast trip, being shutout twice but found some consolation after firing off 55 shots against the Ducks in a 3-2 shootout loss.

The New York Rangers are the only team in the league to be in the top 10 in goals per game (3.35, 3rd), goals allowed (2.50, 9th), power play percentage (22.9), and penalty kill percentage (83.9, 9th).

The Rangers own 13 road victories, tops in the NHL. Bad news for the Flyers who have lost four straight against New York and eight of their last 11 dating back to 2014.

From a wagering perspective, many people focus on teams that are on long win streaks, hoping to ride that run until they lose. I've always been under the impression that I'd rather find teams that could go on losing streaks because a lack of confidence is harder to overcome than having too much. Try to find those teams that still have the confidence of the general public, like Philly or Nashville, and bet against them until you're confident that the losing mentality in the locker room has changed. This way you won't have to lay a big number to bet against a slumping team.

An interesting nugget to keep a watch on is what effect the return of Michal Neuvirth will have on Steve Mason. The perception is that the Flyers will be stronger with two quality goaltenders but the reality is Mason has played much better when not asked to share the net. Mason will make his 24th start in 27 games tonight but was just 2-5-2 with an 8.74 save percentage and 3.56 goals against average with a healthy Neuvirth. With Neuvirth out Mason was 12-7-3 with a 2.46 goals against and a .916 save percentage. Let's bet that he isn't as focused tonight.

The Flyers last regulation home loss was to the Rangers on November 25th.
