Twenty-one of Detroit's past 28 games have stayed "under" the total, and that trend should continue tonight in Los Angeles despite some inconsistency by both goaltenders.

The Detroit Red Wings (26-32-11, 63 points, -31 goal differential) travel to the City of Angels to take on the Los Angeles Kings (38-26-6, 82, +26) tonight at 10:00 ET (NBCSN).

The number on the NHL odds board opened with Los Angeles a -205 favorite, but that didn’t scare the public off of the Kings as the moneyline quickly rose to a high of -250 at Bovada. We’re not getting involved with a number that high, so the focus with our NHL picks will be on the "total." An opening number of 5 was pushed up to 5.5 (-115/under) at Heritage. Good news for my followers as we’re happy to take the hook.

Los Angeles, hanging on to the third playoff spot in the Pacific Division, easily handled Detroit the last time these teams met, 4-1 in Detroit. That was in November so I’m not sure how much you can get out of that game and equate it to this one. Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick wasn’t particularly busy, making just 23 saves, which Jimmy Howard made 32 saves in the loss. Anze Kopitar had two goals and an assist for L.A.

Howard (18-24-8, 2.85, .910) and Quick (27-25-2, .922, 2.44) are the probable starters tonight.

Top 10 Power Rankings: Detroit NR; Los Angeles No. 12.

Key Statistics: Detroit 2.55 goals per game (28th); Los Angeles 2.51 goals allowed per game (second).

All-Time Series Record: Detroit leads 93-89-27; Los Angeles leads 52-38-14 at home.

Series This Decade: Detroit leads 13-11-0; Los Angeles leads 6-5 at home.

The Red Wings are more worried about their draft position than the playoffs. Detroit is playing 11 of 16 games on the road this month and is 0-6-1 in its past seven. There is no way I can bet anything other than the "under" with Jeff Blashill’s team, which has scored just five goals in its last three games.

Howard is the man you want in net if you have a ticket with an "over" bet. He has allowed 17 goals in his last five starts, including eight in his last two, against Vegas and San Jose.

Quick was sensational against Vancouver on Monday, making 35 saves in a 3-0 shutout. However, the trend that seems to be forming is that Quick hasn’t put in a good effort in back-to-back games in a couple weeks. He allowed one goal to Washington earlier this week, then gave up four against St. Louis two nights later.

Tonight, though, expect this interconference matchup to stay "under" the total.
