The Red Wings host the Penguins on Thursday at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit with the opening face-off slated for 7:35 PM ET.

Tale of the Tape
According to NHL betting odds the Penguins are a -125 money line road favorite and the posted total is 5.5. These teams have seen just 5 of their last 23 meetings go over the total. Detroit has gone under the total in 6 of their last 7 home games versus Pittsburgh. The Penguins have gone 6-2 in their last 8-games versus the Red Wings. Pittsburgh is currently 1st in the Metropolitan Division, and 2nd overall in the Eastern Conference. Detroit is 5th in the Atlantic Division, and 10th overall in the East.

Crunch Time in Hockey Town
The Detroit Red Wings have 13-games remaining in the regular season, and as it stands today they’re on the outside looking in. The Red Wings are 1-point behind both Washington and Columbus for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The good news is that Detroit has 2-games in hand on Washington while they have the exact number of games remaining as Columbus. The Red Wings will play at Columbus next Tuesday in what will be their last meeting of the year with the Blue Jackets. Detroit has already finished their season series with Washington. The Red Wings are coming off a 3-2 home win versus Toronto. Despite the win, they’re a head scratching 14-20 versus the money line at home this season. The Red Wings have gone under the total in each of their previous 5-games.

Getting Healthier
The Pittsburgh Penguins are coming off a 5-1 home win over Dallas on Tuesday. Above and beyond the win, was the return from injuries of both high scoring forwards James Neal and Chris Kunitz. The Penguins also received stellar goaltending from backup goaltender Jeff Zatkoff who turned away 32 of 33 shots on net. Zatkoff is now 11-5 versus the money line in 16 starts this season. Marc-Andre Fleury is scheduled to be between the pipes tonight for the Penguins. Although the Penguins have been lights out at home this season, they’re also a very respectable 20-16 versus the money line on the road.

Final Analysis
The Penguins have gone under the total in their last 3 road games. Pittsburgh has seen just 2 of their last 8 on the road go over the total. Detroit has scored just 7-goals over their last 5-games. These teams have has a history of playing on the low side, and that’s where my lean is tonight.

Free Pick: Pittsburgh/Detroit to go under the total of 5.5
