Calgary visits New Jersey on Monday in a game that has large playoff implications for the Devils. Our NHL betting odds expert focuses in on the total in this contest in order to produce our winning NHL pick.

Down the Stretch They Go
The Devils host the Flames on Monday at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey with the opening face-off slated for 7:05 PM ET. According to NHL betting odds the Devils are a -160 money line home favorite and the posted total is 5.0. The home team has won the last 5 meetings between between these clubs. This head-to-head series has seen 6 of the last 8 meetings go under the total. Calgary is 6th in the Pacific Division, and 13th overall in the Western Conference. The Devils are 5th in the Metropolitan, and are tied for 9th overall in the Eastern Conference.

Crunch Time for the Devils
New Jersey enters tonight 3-points behind Columbus for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Both the Devils and Blue Jackets have 4 regular season games left to play. This will be the Devils 3rd game in the last 4-days. They have won their last 2, and earned at least 1-point in each of their last 7-games. New Jersey has gone over the total in just 1 of their last 8-games. They're the best in the NHL in allowing just 25.5 shots on goal per game, and are 7th in the league allowing 2.4 goals per contest. The Devils special teams have been terrific this season. Statistically they're the best penalty killing team in the NHL, and are 9th in the league on the power play.

Flames are Still Burning
I have mentioned this on at least two other occasions in previous articles over the last couple of weeks, the Calgary Flames have not thrown in the proverbial towel on the season. Despite being realistically out of playoff contention in the last 2-months, the effort level of the Flames has been superb with all being considered. They've gone a very respectable 17-11 versus the money line over their last 28-games. Tonight will be their finale of a 5-game in 10-day road trip that's seen them go 2-2 thus far, including winning the last 2. The Flames have gone under the total in 11 of their last 15 versus Eastern Conference teams, and have gone over the total just once in their last 9-games on the road versus an opponent with a winning home record.

NHL Betting System
Any home team with a total of 5.0 or less that's coming off a  division road win, versus an opponent coming off a road 1-goal win, has seen 30 of those 38-games (78.9%) go under the total during the last 18 seasons.

Free Pick: Flames/Devils to go under the total of 5.0
