It’s the first Saturday of the regular season and our NHL betting expert examines the game between the Oilers/Canucks. Join us to read this revealing NHL wagering preview.

Rivalry Renewed at Rogers Arena
The Canucks will host the Oilers in a battle of Pacific Division rivals at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver with the opening puck drop slated for 10:05 PM ET. According to NHL betting odds, the Canucks are a -165 money line favorite, and the posted total is 5.0. The NHL puck-line is showing the Canucks -1.5 goals (+175), and the Oilers +1.5 (-205). The probable starting goaltenders for tonight’s game will be Victor Fasth for Edmonton, and Ryan Miller for Vancouver. Since the start of the 2011-2012 NHL campaign the Canucks have gone 10-6 versus the Oilers.

Same Old Same Old for Oilers
It seems like the Oilers fans, and organization, have entered the last 9-seasons with high expectations based on that omnipresent adjective of potential. The same held true entering this season, and although they’ve played just 1-game, it appears to be the same old Oilers. Edmonton opened the season at home on Thursday and was a 5-2 loser at the hands of the Calgary Flames. They were able to overcome a 2-0 early deficit, tie the game at 2-2, and then allowed 3 unanswered goals in the 3rd period by the Flames. On a positive note, the Oilers outshot the Flames by a 40-26 margin, but were stymied by the superb goaltending display of Karri Ramo who made 38-saves. Taylor Hall was in on both Edmonton tallies with a goal and an assist, but he managed to finish the game a disappointing -2.

A New Year for the Canucks
After enduring an underachieving, and disappointing season a year ago, the Canucks were chomping at the bit to get the 2014-2015 campaign started. They opened the season with a 4-2 win at Calgary on Wednesday, and will look to go 2-0 on the year in their home opener tonight. New acquired free agent acquisition Ryan Miller earned his first win in goal for the Canucks by stopping 23 of 25 shots on goal. The Canucks never trailed in the game, and were led by Henrik Sedin who had a goal in addition to an assist. Vancouver outshot the Flames 33-25, and all in all, it was an impressive opening win, and one that temporarily removed some of the bad taste in their mouth which lingered from a season ago.

Final Analysis
The Oilers enter tonight with some serious futility as an organization that needs to be overcome. They’ve gone 18-45 in their last 63-games versus a Western Conference opponent, and an even worse 24-76 in the last 100 versus teams from the Pacific Division. The concerns for their defensive play and goaltending surely reared their ugly head in their season opener. The Canucks are hoping to build off their win at Calgary with a similar type of effort in front of the home folks tonight. Just like the Flames, tonight’s opponent should provide no excuses for the Canucks to earn anything short of a win. I recommend placing your NHL pick on the Canucks to win in a decisive manner this evening.
