Place NHL Pick on Capitals -120 over Red Wings on the Road

The Red Wings are small road dogs on the NHL betting lines for tonight's game vs. the Washington Capitals, despite the fact that Detroit has a 4-2-2 record so far this season.

The Detroit Red Wings Can Win Because…
The Caps have gone cold. Alex Ovechkin hasn’t registered a point in four straight games and this team only goes as he does. When he’s off, so are the Caps. That’s why they’ve lost two of three. On the whole, Washington’s offense has gone coled over the last week or so as they have averaged just 2.25 goals per game over their last four after averaging 4.0 goals per game in their first four.

Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard has posted a 1.95 GAA over his last six starts and has been very reliable this season. He’s giving the Red Wings a chance to win each and every night. Wednesday should be no different, so take the Red Wings as a road dog on NHL odds of +111.

The Washington Capitals Can Win Because…
Aside from their tricky road trip up North to Canada, they’ve been pretty good this season. The Caps were 3-0-2 before they went on the road to faced Edmonton (loss), Calgary (win) and Vancouver (loss) last week. Now they’ve been resting since Sunday and should be very face to face the Red Wings. Detroit has been pretty hit or miss this season, as evidenced by losses in Montreal and Philadelphia in their two latest outings. On the whole, Detroit is just 3-4 in their last seven games with two of those wins coming against the hapless Toronto Maple Leafs. Their other win was a miracle comeback against the Pittsburgh Penguins (were trailing 3-1 with three minutes to go in the game).

Washington is respectable at home. They should have Braden Holtby between the pipes for this one and he’s 3-1-1 this season with a 1.92 GAA. He’s won both of his career starts against Detroit. That’s why Washington should be the play for your NHL pick tonight.

Outlook & Pick
This is a tricky game to handicap as it’s a very even matchup. I would lean towards the under but with a total of 5, it makes it hard. I’d rather not lay juice here with the Capitals but I’ll take a shot with them. They have been solid at home this year and that should be the difference in this coin flip of a game.
