Our NHL betting odds expert examines the game today between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the New York Rangers and shares his free pick on the money line.

Early Season Playoff Rematch
The Rangers will host the Penguins on Tuesday at Madison Square Garden in New York with the opening face-off slated for 7:05 PM ET. According to the NHL odds at SBR Sportsbook, the Penguins are a -145 money line favorite, and the posted total is 5.5. This will be the first meeting of the season between these Metropolitan Division rivals. The teams last met in the 2014 Eastern Conference Semifinals, and the Rangers overcame a 3-1 series deficit to win in 7-games. They also split 4 regular season games a year ago, and all 4 of those games went over the total.

Sizzling Hot
The Pittsburgh Penguins enter tonight riding a red-hot 7-game winning streak. They’ve not only won the last 7, but have been absolutely dominant in doing so, by outscoring the opposition by a wide 33-8 margin during that stretch. The Penguins are currently tied for 2nd overall in the Eastern Conference, and are only 2-points behind the Tampa Bay Lightning who reside in the top spot. The Penguins special teams have been magnificent to start the season. The power play unit has converted on a mind boggling 21 of their 57 (36.8%) man advantage opportunities. The Penguins penalty killing has been stellar as well, killing off 47 of the 53 power play chances by their opponents. Marc-Andre Fleury is slated to be in goal for Pittsburgh tonight, and he’s gone 4-0 on the road this season with an excellent .944 save percentage.

Reeling Rangers
The defending Eastern Conference champions enter today having lost 2 in a row, and 4 of the last 5-games. This will be the 2nd of a 3-game in 5-day home stand for the NY Rangers, and it began with a terrible 3-1 loss at the hands of the Edmonton Oilers. Unlike their opponent this evening, the Rangers have struggled on the power play, going just 5-for-38 with the man advantage, and that translates to a miserable 13.2% conversion rate. Their penalty killing has also left a lot to be desired. Opponents have cashed in on 10 of 49 (20.4%) power play chances against “The Blue Shirts”. Henrik Lundquist will be in goal for the Rangers today. Lundquist is 6-5 so far this season with a .905 save percentage. After a rather inauspicious start to the year, Lundquist has started to resemble the world class goaltender that he’s proven to be in recent starts. He’s compiled a stellar .923 save percentage over his last 4-outings.

Final Analysis
The Rangers have allowed 3-goals or more in each of their last 4-games. The Penguins have scored 4-goals or more in each of their previous 4-games. The combination of these two factors sets up a very profitable money line betting system, and it makes for a strong case for one of my NHL picks today.

Any home team that’s allowed 3-goals or more in each of their previous 2-games, versus an opponent which has scored 4-goals or more in each of their last 4-contests, has gone 52-27 (67.5%) against the money line since 1996.
