The Los Angeles Kings are road dogs vs. the San Jose Sharks according to the NHL betting odds. They’ll try to stop the bleeding and head into the All-Star break with a little momentum.
The Los Angeles Kings Can Win Because…
The Sharks are a mess right now too. San Jose has dropped four of six and is having a really tough time stopping their opponents from scoring. They’ve given up 3.78 goals per game this month, which is the second worst number in the NHL. Only the Buffalo Sabres (4.33) are worse.
Beyond that, the Sharks have been awful at home, dropping five of their last six on their home ice. That’s downright shocking considering they only lost seven times in regulation at home all of last season. They’re actually just 11-11 at the Shark Tank this year. On the season, the Sharks are just 4-9 when at home with a total of five or less.
The Kings have not been playing well and need any help that they can get, so the Sharks home struggles help. And if the Sharks put Antti Niemi in net, that should give the Kings’ chances a boost too. Niemi has a 3.49 GAA and .874 save percentage this month.
The San Jose Sharks Can Win Because…
The Kings are a sinking ship. Los Angeles hast just one win in their last seven games and continues to have problems with goals allowed. This was the best defensive teams in the NHL last season, giving up just 2.05 goals per game. That’s why it’s downright surprising to know that they’ve allowed 3.44 goals per game over their last 18 outings. Jonathan Quick is an absolute mess these days, posted a 3.42 GAA this month with a paltry .861 save percentage. He’s been terrible on the road all season long with just three wins in 14 starts while posting a 2.87 GAA and .900 save percentage.
The Kings are just 5-13 when on the road with a total of five or less and have dropped nine of their last 12 games in San Jose. This doesn’t look like the right situation for them to get back on track.
This is a hard game to handicap in terms of the side as both teams are miserable. The Kings are awful on the road and have been slumping of late, while the Sharks have been in a rut both at home and overall.
Given the way the goaltenders are playing on both sides, over makes the most sense. We’re facing a short total of just five goals but the Kings have hit at least five goals in seven of their last nine while the Sharks have done the same. Although four of the last five meetings between the teams have gone under, the defense on both sides is playing at a different caliber these days. Take the over with your NHL picks.
