Our resident NHL handicapper breaks down the game on Saturday between St. Louis and Toronto. Can the Blues close out their long road trip with a win? Can the Maple Leafs muster up some pride and pull off the upset? Read this article in order to find out these answers and much more.
Playing the Blues at the Air Canada Centre on Saturday Night
The Toronto Maple Leafs will host the St. Louis Blues on Saturday at 7:05 PM ET. According to the NHL betting odds at 5Dimes, St. Louis is a -170 money line favorite, and the posted total is 5.5. These teams met once this season and St. Louis skated away with a 3-0 win on home ice. The Blues also won both encounters with Toronto a season ago by scores of 5-3 and 6-3.
A Season to Forget for the Leafs
Toronto is coming off a four game in seven day road trip which concluded with a 4-2 loss at Tampa Bay on Thursday. Toronto has gone a dismal 7-27 against the money line in their last thirty-four games, and has been held scoreless on seven separate occasions during that time. On a positive note, Toronto has won each of their last two games at home by scores of 3-2 over Philadelphia and 4-3 versus Winnipeg. Despite the forgettable season that the Leafs are enduring, they’ve gone a very respectable 18-13 against the money line at home. Toronto has seen eight of their previous ten games go under the total, and only six of their last twenty-three games (26.1%) have went over the number.
End of the Road
The St. Louis Blues will be playing the finale of a five game in eleven day road trip on Saturday. They’ve lost each of the previous two by scores of 3-1 versus Philadelphia and 6-5 at the hands of the Vancouver Canucks. The Blues have also gone 2-4 in the last six and 3-5 in their previous eight games against the money line. St. Louis has gone under the total in four of their last five games on the road.
This looks to be the proverbial flat spot for the Blues. There’s no question they’re far and away the better team on paper in this matchup. However, they’re at the tail end of a road trip, and are facing an inferior opponent. I look for the struggling Maple Leafs to come up with a strong effort in the traditional Saturday Hockey Night in Canada broadcast that will be seen throughout “The Great White North”. I’m going to lean toward a big upset in this contest, and I’ll use the home underdog as one of my NHL picks on Saturday.
