Take the time to read our NHL betting preview article on the game between Detroit Red Wings & Carolina Hurricanes that includes a free pick on the money line.

Sunday Afternoon NHL Battle
The Hurricane will host the Red Wings on Sunday afternoon at the PNC Arena in Raleigh, North Carolina with the opening face-off slated for 5:05 PM ET. According to the NHL betting odds at Pinnacle, the Red Wings are a -140 money line favorite, and the posted total is 5.0. This will be the first meeting of the season between these two Eastern Conference teams. Detroit won 2 of their 3-games against Carolina a season ago, and 2 of those 3 went under the total.

Red-Hot Wings
The Detroit Red Wings are coming off a 3-2 home win over the New York Rangers on Saturday. The Wings have now won the last 2, 6 of the last 7, and 8 of their previous 10-games. They’ve really done so on the strength of some stellar offensive production. Detroit has scored 3-goals or more in their last 7, and 9 of the last 10-games. However, it must noted, 6 of their last 7-games has been played on home ice. The Red Wings have seen just 3 of their previous 18-games stay under the total. Detroit gives Jimmy Howard a rest today, and backup Peter Mrazek will be in goal. This will be just the 3rd start of the season for Mrazek, and he’s compiled an unimpressive .875 save percentage in his first two outings.

The Struggles Continue
The Carolina Hurricanes enter today with a poor 8-17 money line record on the season, and have lost 8 of their last 11 overall. Unlike today’s opponent, the Canes have struggled offensively in recent games. Carolina has scored 2-goals or less in 4 of the last 5 and 8 of their last 11-games. That’s really been nothing out of the ordinary considering they’re averaging a paltry 2.3 goals per game on the season. Carolina will turn to backup goaltender Anton Khudobin for today’s game. The Canes #1 goaltender Cam Ward is currently nursing a lower body injury. Khudobin has gone 0-8 in his starts this season despite posting a respectable .903 save percentage. The Carolina backup goaltender has been the victim of a lack of offensive support, playing better than his wins versus losses record may indicate, and especially so at home where he’s compiled a stellar .924 save percentage in 3-starts.

Final Analysis
The Red Wings are clearly the better team in this matchup. However, this will be Detroit’s 3rd game in the last 4-days, and their 2nd in less than 24-hours. Carolina will be playing on 2-days rest, and this will be their 4th of a 5-game in 11-day home stand. I’m going to take a risk with the money line home underdog in this one for one of my NHL picks today.
