Follow along as we offer up our free NHL picks for tonight's matchup between the Carolina Hurricanes and the Vancouver Canucks. Find out why we are backing a low scoring matchup this evening.

Don’t look now but the Vancouver Canucks have some momentum going. They’ve won four straight and five of six. On Monday, they’re expected to add to that streak as they are a big home favorite on the NHL odds over the Carolina Hurricanes, who they have already beaten during their four-game winning streak.

The Carolina Hurricanes can win because…

The Hurricanes come into this game on a hot streak of their own. Consider adding them to your sports picks as they’ve won three straight, two of which were on the road. The ‘Canes haven’t been consistent this season but this is their best stretch of hockey. They’ve won five of seven and are getting the job done but lighting the lamp. They’re averaging 3.7 goals per game over their last seven. If they get to three, that might be enough to be the low-scoring Canucks.

The Vancouver Canucks can win because…

They’ve started December with a vengeance. Although November wasn’t particularly kind to the Canucks (just four wins in 13 games), they’ve already matched that win total in December with four straight victories. One of those came against the ‘Canes in Carolina last Sunday (December 1st), so they know what to do to get the job done.

The Canucks are playing John Tortorella-like hockey these days and anytime a team is buying what the coach is selling, that’s a good thing. They’re playing tight defense (allowed just six goals in their last four) and they are scoring just enough (averaging 3.0 goals per game in that same span). That should be enough to beat a Hurricanes team who has been very mediocre this season.

Outlook & Pick

I’m not going to lay the juice with Vancouver as they are not a great home team while I also have little faith in the Canes traveling to the Northwest in Canada to steal a game they aren’t expected to win. Instead, I’ll add the under to my NHL picks. The Canucks are playing good defense and I’ll expect that to continue on Monday.

Pick: Under 5.5 at Pinnacle
