We head over to the Staples Center for tonight’s home opener for the Los Angeles Kings against the Philadelphia Flyers at 7:00 PT.

Philadelphia Flyers vs Los Angeles Kings

The Flyers, who started their season with an impressive 5-3 road victory at San Jose last night, will be playing their second game in as many nights.

The Flyers ‘no-talk’ about players after morning skate leaves you guessing who’s going to actually be in the line-up at times but it’s still reasonable to speculate who will start in goal who is the first skater off at practice. Michal Neuvirth will most likely get the call opposite of the Kings Jonathan Quick. I like scenario’s where you have two netminders on a team that’s capable of leading of starting especially after Brian Elliot played well enough last night to earn a victory. I’m guessing Neuvirth will be extra focused to match that performance. We can’t overlook the fact that Lehigh Valley goaltender Anthony Stolarz, who played well in seven games with the Kings last season, is breathing down the back of Neuvith for playing time.

You also have to be careful of expectations from Jonathan Quick who played just 19 games a year ago between the Kings and the World Cup due to a groin injury. It’s safe to assume that it will take Quick a couple periods to get back in the groove.

With the Flyers connecting on three of five power play chances and their top three lines all getting involved in the scoring, you have to be confident that momentum will carry over into tonight.

The Kings have yet to spark my confidence that they’ll be any better offensively than they were last year. Only Jeff Carter met expectations with his 32 goal season. Besides Carter only Tanner Pearson managed to scrape together 20 goals. Until I see a change in an offense that finished 25th in scoring last season, I can only assume that’s the kind of output I’m going to see to start the season.

From a trend perspective, the Flyers are 5-1 in their last six meetings in Los Angeles with the road team winning 10 of the last 12 in this series.

I’m not playing the full game for my NHL pick here but a small play on the Flyers 1st period seems like a good risk for a unit.
