The Penguins are -200 favorites on the NHL odds, which is a big price to pay, but they’ve been the better team and the Flyers are in a back-to-back situation.
The Philadelphia Flyers Leafs Can Win Because…
They’ve had the Pens number. Although the Flyers are struggling right now (as evidenced by the NHL odds), facing an in-state rival should fire them up – especially a rival they dominate. They’ve won four of their last five trips to Pittsburgh and they own goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury. He has a mediocre .901 save percentage against them and that’s not including his pathetic efforts in the playoffs. The Flyers offense was silent last night in Chicago but it should wake up in Pittsburgh.
Given the series history, the Flyers are a worthy value play. Take them in this spot as one of tonight's NHL picks.
The Pittsburgh Penguins Can Win Because…
Philadelphia has been a train wreck. So far this season, the Flyers have just one win in six games. They were even lucky to get that as they had to dig out of a 4-2 third period hole in Dallas just to come back. Last night, they were throttled by the Chicago Blackhawks. Why would anyone expect things to turn around on the road on short rest?
Pittsburgh has been a quality bet so far this season with wins in three of their first four games. Their goaltending and defense – the expected weakness of the team – has been reasonably good as they’ve given up just six goals in their last three. As for the Flyers, they’ve allowed at least three goals in five straight games.
This is just a mismatch all over the place. The Pens should come out ahead.
Outlook & Pick
It’s tough to lay this type of juice with the Penguins – especially when you consider that they choked as a home favorite in this vicinity when Dallas came to visit last Thursday. Instead, I’ll go with the over. The Flyers are giving up goals by the bunches and while their offense was quieted last night by the Blackhawks, it should do better against a leaky Pens defense. Take the over with your NHL picks.
