We’re going to examine the totals in Sunday’s NHL games of Dallas vs. Detroit & Edmonton vs. Chicago. Go inside to read our thoughts on these games including an NHL pick on each contest.

Dallas Stars vs. Detroit Red Wings 3:05 PM ET
Detroit will be fully aware that it’s not a good idea to embark in a wide open game against an explosive offensive opponent like Dallas. Subsequently, look for the Red Wings to play a tight checking game, make a concentrated effort to stay out of the penalty box, and prevent Dallas from gathering speed through the neutral zone when they attack offensively. The Red Wings are 6-1-2 under the total in their previous nine games.

Detroit is coming off a pair of identical 2-1 wins over Tampa Bay and Toronto during its last two games. Dallas was a 4-1 winner at Carolina on Friday.

Any home team coming off two 1 goal wins in a row, versus an opponent (Dallas) coming off a win by 3 goals or more, resulted in those games going 33-12 under the total during the past five seasons. This NHL handicapping algorithm isn’t only solid, it also makes logical sense. I like this game to be a low scoring affair for one of my NHL picks on Sunday.

NHL Pick: Play UNDER the total of 5.5 (-110) at 5Dimes

Edmonton Oilers vs. Chicago Blackhawks 8:05 PM ET
Edmonton has scored 3 goals or more in six of their previous eight games. However, the Oilers are a far cry from a good defensive team, evidenced by their 3.1 goals against average per game. The Oilers have gone a perfect 5-0 over the total this season versus opponents that convert 17.5% or better of their power play chances. Chicago enters today at 18.7% on the power play. Edmonton is 5-1-1 over the total during its previous seven games.

The Blackhawks started the season by playing in a bunch of low scoring games. That’s certainly not been the case recently. Chicago has gone over the total in each of their last four games, and there was a combined average of 8.0 goals scored per contest.

Sunday’s expected starters in goal are Cam Talbot of Edmonton and Corey Crawford for Chicago. Both of those goaltenders have been shaky in each of their previous four starts, compiling identical .870 save percentages during those stretches. At the time of this writing, the NHL betting odds at TheGreek.com was the only offshore sportsbook that had a total of 5.0, and the rest were at 5.5.

NHL Pick: Play on OVER the total of 5.0 (-140) at The Greek
