Crucial Game 4 for Florida
The Panthers and Islanders square off on Wednesday in Game 4 of their Eastern Conference Quarterfinal Playoff series. By virtue of their 4-3 overtime win in Game 3, the Islanders hold a 2-1 series lead. Current NHL odds  at Matchbook.com has the Islanders as a -105 money line favorite, and the posted total is 5.0. Since the start of the 2013-2014 NHL campaign, these Easter Conference clubs have met twelve times, and those games went 9-2-1 over the total.

Summary of First Three Games
This series has been very evenly contested with all being considered. Both teams have averaged 3.3 goals per game, and the Islanders hold a narrow 117-116 shots on goal advantage. One thing that does jump out at me, Florida has outscored New York 7-2 during first period action, yet they face a 2-1 series deficit on Wednesday.

The series hasn’t lacked for excitement. The first three games saw 20 goals being scored, and there also was a cumulative average of 77.7 shots on goal per contest. If Florida happens to lose this series, I’m sure they’ll reflect back on Game 3 in Brooklyn. The Panthers squandered a pair of 2 goal leads in that contest, and ultimately fell 4-3 in overtime. As a result, they missed a golden opportunity to regain home ice advantage in this series.

Panthers Resiliency Test
It will be interesting to see how Florida responds tonight after suffering such an excruciating loss in Game 3. The Panthers have displayed an ability of late to bounce back from a defeat. As a matter of fact, Florida has gone 6-1 during its last seven following a loss in their previous game. If the Panthers hope to even this series up, they’re going to need more consistent play in goal from Roberto Luongo. He was terrific during a 3-1 win in Game 2. However, Games 1 and 3 were a whole different story. During those two outings, Luongo surrendered a combined 9 goals, and had a terrible .862 save percentage.

Final Take and Pick
Florida has seen only 4 of its last 23 games (17.4%) stay under the total. The Panthers have scored 3 goals or more in eight of their previous nine, and during thirteen of its last sixteen games.

Despite going a very good 8-4 during its previous twelve games, the Islanders have allowed a lofty 3.1 goals per game during that stretch. They’ve also gone 6-1-1 over the total during their previous eight games.

I’m leaning toward this game being a high scoring affair, and one of my Wednesday NHL picks will be indicative of that assessment.
