The Oilers face their first test of the season against a Stanley Cup contender, read on to find out why they offer the best opportunity to make money this season, get ready for this NHL pick.

2016-17 NHL Selection Record:  9-7   56.25%   -1.67 units

There are times during the season that opportunity stares at you and you have to make a choice how much faith you're willing to put in that chance. We are not going to put a full 10 units into this play but 9 is sufficient. It's not a rare 'full confidence' game but it's as close as I've been all season. Before we get into the game let's take our customary look at National Hockey League betting trends in this young season.

Favorites are cashing tickets at a 69.89% (65-23-4-1) while underdogs receiving +1.5 are 63-30 (67.74%).

'Total' bettors are having a more difficult time as 'overs' ruled early on. Now 'unders' are beginning to catch up 'overs' are still 45-39 but that gap is closing with every passing day.

That brings us to tonight's game.

It's safe to say that the way we used to think about the Oilers has changed. Last year after six games the Oilers were 2-4 with a goal differential of -4 but this season it's the opposite as Edmonton is 5-1 with a differential of +7.

The Oilers goaltending seemed to be a major concern as the season started but Cam Talbot still does not have numbers that we would consider to 'Elite' but recently he seems to have found a groove. In his last three starts, Talbot has allowed just three goals along with a shutout against Winnipeg. In those three victories, it was Talbot who made an average of 33 saves per game. His goals-against average has fallen from 4.60 to 2.75, his save percentage from .869 to .919.  To back that up, Talbot was named the league's number one star this week.

As we look to other reasons why the Oilers have found success, the health of Connor McDavid and how he has made his linemates better is a major factor in my confidence in Edmonton. The McDavid line has been one of the best in puck possession this season while combining for nine of the Oilers 24 goals.
