New York Islanders vs. Florida Panthers

Pivotal Game 5 for Islanders and Panthers
The Islanders and Panthers will play an all important Game 5 of their Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series on Friday which is knotted up at 2-2. Florida was able to regain home ice advantage following a 2-1 road win in Game 4. That result kept with the theme of each team winning alternating games in this series. Totals results in this series have also taken a similar path, Games 1 and 3 went over the total, and Games 2 and 4 stayed under. Since the onset of the 2013-2014 NHL campaign, these teams have gone 9-3-1 over the total during their thirteen games against one another. Current NHL odds at Sportsbetting.com has Florida as a -165 money line favorite, and the posted total is 5.0.

Isles Intriguing Recent Trends
The Islanders squandered a golden opportunity to seize control of this series by losing Game 4 at home. On a positive note pertaining to that defeat, the Islanders are 5-1 during its last six following a loss in their previous game. As a matter of fact, they’ve gone 24-14 overall this season after suffering a loss in their previous outing. The Islanders have gone a somewhat respectable 21-22 on the road this season, and that includes 2-2 during games played at The BB&T Arena in Sunrise, Florida.

Panthers Report
Contrary to Friday’s opponent, Florida has gone a concerning 3-11 during its last fourteen outings, following a win in their previous game. Florida went on an eleven game winning streak in late December and early January. However, since that time, they’ve gone a rather average 23-21.

Final Take and Analysis
Thomas Greiss and Roberto Luongo have both been good, but not great during the first four games. The one decided advantage I deemed the Islanders to have in this series was on special teams. I still believe that will be a determining factor in the outcome of this Eastern Conference Quarterfinal. I like the road underdog value in this game tonight, and one of my Friday NHL picks will be indicative of that statement.
