The Boston Bruins got their season started with a hard-fought 2-1 win on Wednesday night. Now they have a quick turnaround and visit Detroit in a back-to-back situation. The Bruins are a -125 favorite on the NHL odds.

The Boston Bruins Can Win Because…
They’re an excellent road team. The Bruins finished with the best road record in the Eastern Conference last season, going 23-12-6. At the same time, Detroit was a wreck at home, going just 18-23 at Joe Louis Arena. While the Red Wings have the home ice in this matchup, it’s questionable whether or not it’s actually an advantage.

Although the Bruins are in a back-to-back, the Red Wings are shorthanded. They won’t have Pavel Datsyuk in the lineup on Thursday night and this is a completely different team when he’s not on the ice. Also, Stephen Weiss is a question mark.

The Boston Bruins are just the better team all the way around: better offense, better defense and better goaltender. With no home-ice advantage to speak of, the Red Wings are in tough here.

The Detroit Red Wings Can Win Because…
The Bruins didn’t look that good last night. The Bruins hosted the Philadelphia Flyers as a -180 odds favorite but they were far from dominant. They needed a lucky bounce with under two minutes to go to get the win.

It’s a new season in Detroit and while there is no Datsyuk, most of the rest of the team is healthy. There should be some optimism surrounding this team after they were decimated by injuries last season. Speaking of injuries, the Bruins will be without David Krejci for this one, which is significant news. The Bruins lost 30-goal scorer Jarome Iginla in the offseason and now without Krejci, their offense is a tad limited. There’s an opening for Detroit here.

Outlook & Pick
The Bruins crushed the Red Wings 4-1 in the first round of the playoffs last season and they should get the win in this spot. The NHL odds show they’re a small favorite and the price seems about right. However, under should be the better play here as the Bruins are a good defensive team and there’s no Datsyuk in the lineup. There’s also no Krejci. Take the under with your NHL picks.
