Our NHL consultant examines each total in tonight’s games between the Maple Leafs/Islanders and Jets/Predators. Join us in reading his informative analysis on both of these contests which also includes his selections for each total.

Toronto Maple Leafs vs. New York Islanders 7:05 PM ET
Total: 5.5
These teams have met four times since the start of last season, each of those contests went over the total, and there were an average of 7.7 combined goals scored per game.

After going through a prolonged goal scoring slump, Toronto has seemed to end those miseries by scoring nine goals in their previous two games. Toronto hasn’t seen any of their last four games stay under the total, and those contests averaged a combined 6.7 goals per outing. The major flaws of this Toronto team this season has been their shoddy defensive play and inconsistent goaltending. Toronto has allowed an average of 3.1 goals per contest, and opponents have averaged 32.8 shots on goal per game when facing the Maple Leafs this season.

The New York Islanders enter tonight averaging a robust 3.6 goals per game and 36.0 shots on goal per contest on home ice during the 2014-2015 NHL campaign. The Islanders have seen just one of their previous seven games go under the total posted on the NHL odds at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale. Those previous seven home games averaged a combined 7.2 goals scored per contest.

NHL Pick: Maple Leafs and Islanders to go over 5.5 at 5Dimes

Winnipeg Jets vs. Nashville Predators (8:05 PM ET
Total: 5.5
The Winnipeg Jets have seen just four of their previous twenty-three games (17.4%) stay under the total. The last time the Jets faced the Predators this season they were a 2-1 loser on the road. The Jets have seen all six of their road games go over the total this season when playing with same season revenge, and there was an average of 7.8 goals scored in each of those contests.

The Nashville Predators have scored three goals or more in each of the last three, five of the last six, and seven of their previous nine games. The Predators have allowed exactly two goals in each of their last three games. Nashville has gone over the total in all five games this season after allowing two goals or less in each of their previous three games. The Predators have seen just one of their previous seven at home go under the total.

I would assume that if you read the last two paragraphs, my case for this game going over the number is fairly obvious. I’m opting for this game being a high scoring affair for one of my NHL picks on Thursday.

NHL Pick: Jets and Predators to go over the total of 5.5 at Pinnacle.
