Free NHL picks and predictions for the Monday night matchup between the Vancouver Canucks and the Detroit Red Wings. Find out why we have decided to place our picks on the total in tonight's battle.

At the end of December, the Vancouver Canucks were unstoppable. It looked like hiring head coach John Tortorella had paid dividends. Fast forward to the start of February and the Canucks are one of the worst teams in the NHL right now and might even consider firing Tortorella at the end of the season if things don’t shape up.

The Vancouver Canucks Can Win Because…

The Red Wings don’t have any momentum. Detroit hasn’t won or lost more than two games in a row since December 17th. They’ll do some impressive things like win in Chicago as they did on January 22nd and then they’ll cripple your bankroll with ugly home losses to teams like Florida. They’re unpredictable.

What we do know about Detroit is that they’ve lost 19 of their 29 home games this season and are absolutely horrible at Joe Louis Arena. Buyer beware if you’re taking them on the NHL odds.

The Detroit Red Wings Can Win Because….

The Canucks are miserable these days. Vancouver has lost three straight coming into this meeting and have dropped 12 of 16 overall. They simply can’t buy a win these days. When you take a closer look at who they’ve lost to, you’ll be ever more deterred from adding them to your sports picks. They lost at home to Edmonton last Monday, at home to Nashville the week before that, lost in Phoenix, fell 9-1 in Anaheim and even lost in Los Angeles even though the Kings are in a massive slump. The Canucks probably couldn’t Switzerland’s women’s hockey team these days. That’s why you should take Detroit with your NHL picks

Outlook & Pick

This is a tough game to predict. The Red Wings are the better choice (slightly) but they are in a back-to-back situation and also playing their third game in four nights.

Instead, I’ll take a shot with the over. Five is too low considering Detroit hasn’t gone under that number in seven straight while the Canucks haven’t in four straight.

Pick: Over 5 at Pinnacle
