It’s Martin Luther King Day, which means we’ll have some early action in NHL. Islanders vs. Flyers will start at 1:00 PM ET. We’ve looked through the rest of the card and found our favorite NHL picks.
Carolina Hurricanes vs. Toronto Maple Leafs
Odds: Maple Leafs -160
The Toronto Maple Leafs are having a really tough time scoring goals and a matchup against a quality Carolina Hurricanes team might not be ideal for them right now. Yes, the Hurricanes are just 5-16-3 on the road and the Leafs are 15-9-0 at home, but the two teams have been trending in opposite directions of late. The Leafs have lost 12 of 15 while Carolina has won five of eight.
The other issue is that this series tips in Carolina’s favor as the Hurricanes have won seven of nine and 13 of the last 18 matchups. Cam Ward is 6-1-1 with a 1.86 GAA in his last eight starts versus the Maple Leafs. It’s hard to have much faith in the Leafs right now. The home-away splits are a concern but everything else points in the Hurricanes direction. This is decent value for a team that has a very reasonable chance to win the game.

Colorado Avalanche vs. St. Louis Blues
Odds: Blues -200
The Avs and Blues are both playing well, but on different levels. While it’s good that the Avs are 6-2-2 in their last 10 games, in betting terms, they are 6-4 and that’s not overly profitable. They have lost three of four overall – all on the road – and will be wrapping up their five-game road trip in St. Louis on Monday.
As for the Blues, they have won six of seven and their offense has been on fire. They’ve averaged 4.85 goals per game in that span. They’re also 9-3-1 in the last 13 meetings between the teams including 7-1-0 in the last eight at home. I’ll take the Blues with my NHL picks here but with the juice being so high, I’ll lay the puckline.

New Jersey Devils vs. San Jose Sharks
The San Jose Sharks are having some goaltending issues this month, which has NHL odds led to some higher scoring games. They’ve reached five goals or more in six of their eight games this month. As for New Jersey, they’re not a high scoring team but they too have experienced a number of overs recently. Six of their last seven have hit five goals or more.
Supporting the case for the over is the play of both goaltenders. Sharks netminder Antti Niemi is just 3-3-1 with a 3.49 GAA in his last seven starts. As for Cory Schneider, he has lost five straight to San Jose and has a lofty 3.55 GAA against them. With those factors in mind, we should see at least five goals in this one. Go over the number here.
