Our resident NHL handicapper shares his 2 best totals selections on Saturday’s huge card. He breaks down the totals in the games between Buffalo/Florida and Ottawa/San Jose.
Sabres in South Florida
The Florida Panthers will host the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday afternoon at 3:05 PM ET. According to the NHL betting odds at Bookmaker, the total for this game is 5.0.
Sabres Scoring Surge is a Mirage
The Buffalo Sabres are the lowest scoring team in the NHL averaging just 1.9 goals per game. Somehow they’ve managed to score ten goals in their previous two games during wins over Columbus 4-2 and Vancouver 6-3. Buffalo was aided by the poor goaltending of Anton Forsberg of Columbus and Eddie Lack of Vancouver who combined to let in several soft goals. However, what hasn’t been a fluke is the recent play of goaltender Michal Neuvirth. Since the trade of Joans Enroth to Dallas, Neuvirth has started in all seven games for the Sabres, and has compiled an excellent .950 save percentage in those outings.
Power Outage for the Panthers
The Florida Panthers enter today having scored a combined four goals during their last three games. As a matter of fact, Florida has scored one goal or less in six of their previous nine games. The Panthers have seen seventeen of twenty-three games (73.9%) this season go under the total when facing an opponent with a less than .500 winning percentage, and that includes each of their of their last seven in that role. Roberto Luongo will be between the pipes today for Florida and he’s posted a stellar .921 save percentage in fifty starts this season.

Senators look to extend Win Streak in San Jose
The San Jose Sharks entertain the Ottawa Senators on Saturday at 10:05 PM ET. According to the NHL betting odds at 5Dimes, the total in this contest is 5.5. Ottawa enters tonight’s game riding a four game winning streak.
Ottawa Rookie Goaltender is Red-Hot
The Ottawa Senators have been without the services of what had been previously the top two goaltenders on their depth chart. Both Craig Anderson and Robin Lehner have been sidelined by injuries. The Senators coaching staff may have to rethink the pecking order when one or both of those goaltenders return to the lineup, due to the recent magnificent play of rookie Andrew Hammond. The Bowling Green University product has been spectacular in the first five starts of his NHL career, compiling an excellent .962 save percentage, a 1.15 GAA, and has posted shutouts in each of his last two starts. He’ll be facing a San Jose team tonight which has scored two goals or less in four of their previous five games. Ottawa has seen just ten of their thirty games (33.3%) on the road go over the total. I like this contest to play on the low side of the totals ledger for one of my NHL picks on Saturday.
