Our look into the NHL odds continues today with six extremely difficult choices. Ended up spending double the time I usually do to generate three plays because of the teams and matchups.

This does not mean outcome will be negative, just that we had a go a little further to unearth what we hope is the desired outcome for NHL picks. After several days of mediocrity, I mentioned yesterday had the look of a return to normalcy and ended up being spot on with a sweep against the NHL odds.

No promises this happens two days in a row, but he assured it will not be for lack of effort if it does not turn out that way.

Calgary Hurts Colorado's Playoff Chances
Colorado (36-35 SU) holds a one point edge over Minnesota in the Western Conference with 11 games remaining, with each team trying to secure final playoff slot. The Avalanche continue western Canada road trip with a visit to Calgary (30-40 SU), who has nothing to play for other then pride.

Colorado players know the playoffs, at least for them, have already started and margin for error is slim. The Avs are 1-1 on the trip thus far after 3-1 victory at Vancouver Wednesday and coach Patrick Roy is doing his best to keep his club in the present. "We did what we had to do (Wednesday)," Roy said. "Now we're going to have to refocus for Calgary. That's what good teams (do). Good teams are capable of refocusing and getting their game ready for the next challenge."

The Flames do present a challenge, as they have won four of six themselves and oddsmakers have them as -115 home favorite. Calgary has a hot line in Michael Frolik, Mikael Backlund and Joe Colborne, who have combined for 17 points on last six games and the Flames are 12-4 at home after scoring four goals or more in two straight games the last three seasons..

Anaheim Continues Mastery of Boston
Anaheim (38-31) is off a hard to swallow 2-1 loss the New York Rangers, which is their fourth in five games after reaching the first place summit in the Pacific Division, only to slide back again to second place. It has been an all too familiar story for Ducks fans as the offense has gone as cold as the ice the team plays on with four goals in those four setbacks.

However, facing Boston (39-32 SU) might be the elixir to wake up the Anaheim offense. The Bruins defense has gotten much better from early in the season, but is hardly stout, listed 18th at 2.68 goals allowed. They have lost four consecutive times to Anaheim and seven of nine dating back to 2009, including 6-2 shellacking in late January.

Sportsbooks have posted the Ducks as -150 home favorites and hard to disagree even if the B's are 23-11 SU on the road.

Washington Seeks Fast Start Against Nashville
National Hockey League teams are broken down into three segments at the present time. Those fighting for playoff positioning, those playing out the season and what Washington (50-19 SU) is doing.

Though the Capitals have not wrapped up home ice for the entire Stanley Cup playoffs, they have held a significant lead for some time and have been going through the motions as 6-5 SU record in past 11 suggests. With 13 games remaining, coach Peter Laviolette has addressed what that players have known about, slow starts.

Over Washington's last 16 games, they have outscored 17-4 in the first period and actually lead a grand total of 2:08 minutes out of a possible 320. The Caps talent eventually allowed them to win 10 of those games, but that is not the point.

The team collectively felt much better after scoreless first period in 2-1 OT win over Carolina Tuesday as they skated with purpose and clanged three different shots off the iron in first 20 minutes.

Though Nashville is playing their best hockey in winning nine of 12, Washington is a -170 favorite and is 9-0 after a one goal triumph over a division foe.
