The powerful overlord known as the NFL will fill the thoughts of most people's heads today. But those are not the only betting odds from sportsbooks today as delve into hockey also.

I admit it has not been a good couple of days after a good start to the week for NHL picks. When something is not working, it is often best to take a fresh perspective and change things up. This is exactly what is being done today, as this hockey handicapper has spotted three contests in which the underdog has a legit shot at winning against the NHL odds and I will explains why.

Big Underdog Winnipeg Has Positives in Chicago
It was looking like another lost season for the Jets who lost six in a row from Nov.5th thru the 16th. Most of those losses came on the road where the defense was completely horrible in allowing 4.5 goals a game. Since then, Winnipeg (13-14 SU) has made some adjustments and have won last two, three of four and five of eight. They are from prefect, still having too many breakdowns in surrendering 14 goals in their losses, but are figuring out how to play better, with only six goals given up in their wins.

Chicago (13-13 SU) is scuffling, losers of three in a row and five of seven. Offensively, other than Patrick Kane, the NHL's top point producer, and Artemi Panarin, the Blackhawks are not getting much done and defensively, holes all over the place.

The Jets are +190 road underdogs at Heritagesports.eu and with their 2-1 win at home over Washington, they are 8-3 away after a victory by one goal at home. Winnipeg has also won four of last five at the United Center and beat Chicago at home back on Oct.29th and the Blackhawks are 0-5 this season playing into revenge.

Free NHL Pick: Winnipeg Jets +190 at 5Dimes

Florida Flourishing on the Road Currently
The Panthers wrap up their five-game road trip tonight in New Jersey and look for the clean sweep and their sixth win in a row overall. Florida (13-13 SU) has not won six straight in more than 8 1/2 years, last doing so in March of 2008 and their five consecutive wins on the road overall is the second time they have accomplished this.

Why Florida has value for sports picks is exceptional play on defense and in goal with either Roberto Luongo or fellow goaltender Al Montoya. They have conceded only six goals during the streak and only four on the road trip. Luongo is expected back between the pipes after sitting out Friday and has a 1.22 goals against average over his last four outings.

New Jersey (13 -13 SU) has dropped six of nine and conceivably falls right into the hands of Florida, ranked 29th in scoring at home with 2.0 goals a game. The Panthers are a sweet 6-0 off a road win and are an attractive +105 choice.

Free NHL Pick: Florida Panthers +107 at Pinnacle

Ottawa Tries to Take Advantage of Rangers Shortcomings
When the New York Rangers (17-10 SU) won 13 of 15 games, their offense was electric in scoring 3.4 GAG. In losing five of six since, the Rangers have been anemic in scoring less than half that amount at 1.67.

Ottawa (14-12 SU) arrives in the Big Apple bursting with confidence off two victories and six of eight and knowing they can find the back of the net, ranked fourth in the league in scoring at 3.15 GAG. The Senators have several scoring options and one the hottest has been Erik Karlsson, who leads all NHL defensemen with 32 points and has 20 over his last dozen outings.

Ottawa is a +165 away dog but should play fearlessly, winning of 27 of past 38 at Madison Square Garden. The Senators lost 2-1 to New York at home on Nov.14th and they are 22-8 revenging a loss as a home favorite the last two seasons.

Free NHL Pick: Ottawa Senators +165 at William Hill
