NHL Picks of the Day: Stanley Cup Playoffs Plus Prop Wagers

Monday, April 25, 2016 7:28 PM GMT

Two series remain in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs and one or both could conclude this evening. Both encounters will have more drama than MTV's "The Challenge". Check The NHL pick.

The festivities will start on North America's favorite hockey network, CNBC, with Game 6 Anaheim trying to closeout Nashville after starting down 0-2. Thirty minutes later it is Game 7 between Chicago and St. Louis. We already have a long form article on the side for that contest here at sportsbookview.com.

Not unexpectedly, underdogs had a tough time over the weekend and are back below .500 at 21-23, but are profitable +3.69 units to this moment. After a freaky Friday, I was this close to 6-0 weekend, but of course Florida lost in double OT (1-5 in playoffs), leaving me 20-19 in all NHL picks and down on units.

For today against the NHL odds boards, have thoughts on side and total for Ducks and Predators, along with total on Blackhawks and Blues and a couple props.

Two Picks in the Music City for Game 6
After scoring six goals in the first two contests, the Nashville offense has gone ice cold against the regular season's best defense in Anaheim. In the next three games, all losses, the Predators have three total goals, which has placed more pressure on the defense to stand up and they have crumbled with 12 goals surrendered.

This is Nashville's last stand if they want to extend series and the words being used by certain Preds players and situation is not exactly inspiring. Take what center Ryan Johansen told the team's official website.

"Our job is to throw on the jersey at home and try and bring it back here to Anaheim." Maybe that quote was lifted out of a broader context, but it is not uplifting if you are a Nashville fan. Couple this with the Predators are 0-8 when trailing 3-2 in a series and Anaheim look better with each passing minute.

In reviewing the total, the Ducks had the best penalty killing unit in the regular season and that has continued in the playoffs, having permitted one goal in 22 Nashville power plays. The switch to goalie Frederik Andersen energized Anaheim and cannot see the Predators scoring more than twice. Looking for the Ducks to have 3-2 late in the game and pick up empty net goal and move to 7-0 when leading playoff series.

Lower Scoring in St. Louis
It is normal expectation that a Game 7 in any series tends to have the teams play more conservative and in the last 11 years, the 'Under' is 22-15-6 in this exact situation. GTBets has the total set at five and one of the great aspects about hockey is the referees tend to let the players determine the outcome by calling only the most obvious penalties and letting the play just flow.

There has not been an 'Under' since Game 1, with the 'Over' sitting at 3-1-2. With both teams having solved both defenses and goaltenders to a certain degree, it be easy to think quite a few goals,. however, I believe St. Louis will do anything to slow the pace and this is 'Under' or push for total bet.

Stanley Cup Prop Possibilities
Chicago's Andrew Ladd Over/Under 3 Shots on Goal
Even if you have been paying close attention, you might not realize Andrew Ladd is tied with Patrick Kane for the second-most shots in this series for Chicago at 22. (Marian Hossa has 28) The assumption is Kane, Hossa or Jonathan Toews will take the majority of shots, but St. Louis has let Ladd tee them up and though he has only one goal, his confidence remains high and with 3 shots at Even money (compared to -120 as normal wager), also a good value on the 'Over'.

Pick: Nashville Over/Under 29.5 Shots on Goal

Thus far in the series Nashville has averaged 29.4 shots and with three goals in last nine periods, playing the same way will not cut it. Being home and desperate, the Predators come out firing and go after Anaheim with loaded curved sticks, shooting continually to try and break the Ducks defense and surpass oddsmakers shot total. Play 'Over'.
