The season is rounding into the home stretch and there is plenty of betting value in the NHL odds as we go forward. Let’s take a look at some of those games and see if we can add to our bankroll with these NHL picks.

Buffalo (16-41, -10.2 units) vs. Flyers (24-33, -7.2 units)
Buffalo is currently the worst team in the league and has dropped their last four games while losing all six of their most recent games in Philadelphia and sporting a woeful 2-12 mark against the Flyers over the course of their last 14 meetings. This is mismatch particularly when you consider that the Sabres have averaged only a goal per game over their last three games while allowing a power play goal in four of their last five games.

Conversely, the Flyers have scored a power play goal in each of their last four games which should make their man-advantage situations against the Sabres tonight particularly appealing for that power play unit. The Sabres are dead last in all four major categories which means they are 30th in goals scored, goals allowed, power play percentage and penalty killing percentage. They are a mess and the Flyers are playing well. Couple all this in with the fact that Philadelphia has owned them over the last several years which makes the Philadelphia Flyers and absolute must inclusion in our NHL picks for tonight.

For those who are gun shy and refuse to lay north of -200 in NHL odds I would say only this. Three of the last five games between these clubs have been one goal victories by Philadelphia while the other two Flyer wins were by three goal margins. I am not willing to save the juice just to lay 1 ½ goals and watch Philly celebrate a one goal win while I rip up what should have been a winning ticket. If you want, put Philadelphia in a parlay or be them flat laying the heavy lumber but by all means – bet them!

NHL Picks: Philadelphia -259 at Pinnacle.

Blue Jackets (25-30, +3.5 units) vs. Penguins (32-25, -3.4 units)
The Pens have dropped their last two by scores of 2-1 at Chicago and most recently a 3-1 home loss to the Capitals where Pittsburgh was installed as a -165 favorite in NHL betting odds. Their opponents tonight, the Columbus Blue Jackets, are playing their third game of a five-game road trip which began with a 6-3 loss to the upstart Islanders but the club rebounded Tuesday night with a 5-2 victory over the Flyers as +125 underdogs in NHL odds.

Interestingly the Penguins have a winning record against all divisions except their own where they have registered a 7-10-4 mark. Tonight Pittsburgh hopes to improve that record when they face-off against the sixth place Jackets. The Penguins defeated these same Blue Jackets in the opening round of last year’s playoffs four games to two. However this season the teams have met only once but it was Columbus that notched a 4-3 victory in a shootout.

In this spot the dog is live and I say that because Columbus has no fear of the Penguins and Curtis McElhinney has been in a groove lately between the pipes for the Jackets. McElhinney was razor sharp backstopping Columbus to a 5-2 victory over Philly on Tuesday night where he turned aside 42 of 44 shots. Let’s also not forget that Columbus has dropped off precipitously from their playoff caliber season last year due primarily to injuries. They are getting healthier and their play recently illustrates just that. I love the value the NHL odds makers are giving us in this one.
