With most teams having 11-13 games remaining, if you are in the playoff chase it is go time. The same is true for hockey bettors working the NHL odds. Sharpened your skills before the postseason.

In these last several contests, best to watch how all the contenders are playing, which could be a precursor how they will play in the first round. This is excellent time to follow not only the wins and losses, but how both the offenses and defenses are performing, what is the goalie situation, is he in good form or a little shaky in shots to his glove side.

Also, special teams are extremely important, check the box scores for if penalty killers are holding up or if the power play is peaking or heading towards the low ebb.

Tough day to find three NHL picks that real standout, but here are my best choices.

Blues Try to Hit Right Notes
On Monday I tried to explain St. Louis (41-30 SU) was in a flat spot riding a six-game winning streak, but I thought they were professional enough to hold off Calgary on the road and a loss or maybe two could be coming down the line on this road trip. I gave the Blues too much credit, as they gave up a season-high seven goals with incredibly careless play, with the Flames having several break-away's.

Maybe I should be smarter here, but based on comments made by coach Ken Hitchcock and other St. Louis players after the game, there was a sense of responsibility and talk of lesson learned. Does this carry over onto ice next time, not necessarily. Nonetheless, the Blues are still scoring 4.2 goals a game in their last seven contests, which could be a big benefit to them since Edmonton's (27-45 SU) offense has six scores in their past five times taking the ice. The NHL odds have St. Louis at -150 and the Oilers are 2-14 off two or more consecutive home losses the last two seasons.

Flashing Lights In Buffalo Signify Goals Being Scores
Sportsbooks have been rather accurate of assessments of Montreal and Buffalo when it comes to making numbers on totals. The Canadiens 3-0-5 OVER in their last eight and the Sabres are 3-0-3 OVER in there last half dozen. Between them that is eight Pushes in 14 tilts, however, you might notice one other aspect, there have been no low scoring outcomes.

These Eastern Conference non-contenders are in the bottom half of most defensive stats. Both clubs are missing defensive contributors which unquestionably would help the stop troops and made their season records better. But this is not going to happen and these two were 4-0-2 OVER of late. Montreal provides plenty of incentive to back a higher score with 14-4 OVER mark in a road game when the total is five or less and they are 8-1 OVER after playing three consecutive home games this season. Everything seems to line up for more scoring.

Anaheim Roughs Up Rangers
After scoring three goals in three skirmishes, all losses, the Ducks came out madder than Donald Duck and laid out New Jersey Monday 7-1. Dropping that trio of tasks sent Anaheim (38-30 SU) out of first place, which was unsettling after 11-game winning streak, in which they surpassed Los Angeles and had actually beaten them twice.

If the Ducks want to reclaim the top spot in the Pacific, they have to start another winning streak. They should be able to generate some good scoring chances versus the New York Rangers (39-30 SU) defense, which has sprung some leaks.

The Rangers have lost four of six and in the process permitted 3.6 goals a game. New York has not played since Sunday, but face the cream of the Pacific with three games in four nights starting this evening. With unstable defense, the Blueshirts are +145 road underdogs and Anaheim is 17-6 after scoring five goals or more in their previous game the last two seasons.

Free Pick - Anaheim wins
