Solid NHL slate of action today and the books have posted some rather large betting odds on home favorites. While the last week has been rather tumultuous, we think tonight will be calmer.

This is why we are giving our support to some the larger favorites for NHL picks, really preferring their situations and not seeing any value as a hockey handicapper to betting the other way. The NHL odds you will be reading are from Youwager.

Washington Cools Off Detroit
The Red Wings offense has been playing like atomic sauce on buffalo wings, scoring five goals in each of their past three contests. After scuffling early with new head coach, Detroit (15-12 SU) has registered points in 10 consecutive games (7-0-3) , which is longest point streak since a 10-0-2 stretch in the spring of 2010. However, this could be a much tougher task.

In Detroit's last four matchups with Washington(18-7 SU), they have registered exactly one goal each time, losing three of those encounters. The culprit for their lack of success has been goalie Braden Holtby, who was in the nets in each of those contests and is having a sensational start to this season, leading all goaltenders with a 1.95 goals against average.

Possibly this is the game Detroit finally cracks the code on Holtby, but it's not like the Capitals are playing poorly, having won six of seven, losing at Winnipeg 2-1 Saturday. Washington is 10-3-1 on home ice and Holtby has a 1.70 GAA, winning seven straight home starts and is 10-2 SU with a 1.84 GAA at Verizon Center.

With the Caps just a -160 home favorite, with the best goalie in the league and 7-0 off a defeat this season, they are my choice for sports picks.

Free NHL Pick: Washington Senators -160 to Win

Struggling St. Louis Overcomes Themselves for the Win
Things have gone from bad to worse for the Blues, who have lost eight of their last dozen tilts. St. Louis (15-12 SU) is on a three-game losing streak and it's offense has gone colder than a January Missouri night with three scores in the past three games.

But help might be on the way, with Arizona (13-14 SU) coming to town. The Coyotes began their five-game road trip very hopeful after winning three straight times and thought the defense and goaltending problems were behind them. Guess again, as the Yotes have permitted five goals in each of four away contest on this trip, all which evolved to losses.

St. Louis has to be pleased to see Arizona, having beaten them five times in a row and outscoring them 20-5. We actually get a little value on the money line also, as the Blues have dropped from -210 to -185 this morning. With St. Louis 17-4 off a home loss, like our chances here.

Free NHL Pick: St. Louis Blues -185 to Win

Dallas Back to Normal at Home
The Stars are just .500 in their last six outings, having dumped two of three in Western Canada. Now back in the Metro-Plex, Dallas (20-7 SU) looks to continue winning ways against Carolina. The Stars are 9-3 at home and while the Hurricanes have won the their last two, the numbers are not in their favor.

Dallas has tallied 13 goals in past trio of contests with Carolina (10-17 SU) and since the beginning of November, no team has allowed more goals than the Hurricanes at 3.13 per game. It is unlikely to matter who is between the pipes for Carolina, as both Cam Ward and backup Eddie Lack have been lackluster. Their weak showing is made worse as the Hurricanes have one of the worst penalty kill groups as visitor's (69%) this season.

With Dallas third in power play percentage (24.1) and 11-1 playing only their second game in five days, the Stars should shine as -210 favorites.

Free NHL Pick: Dallas Stars -210 to Win
