We’ll be examining the contest between Vancouver and Montreal in this NHL betting preview article. Take the time to read this informative NHL handicapping analysis that concludes with a free pick on the total.

Canucks versus Canadiens at the “Cathedral of Hockey”
The Canadiens will play host to the Canucks on Tuesday at the Bell Centre in Montreal with the opening face-off scheduled for 7:35 PM ET. According to the NHL odds at Pinnacle, Montreal is a -118 money line favorite, and the posted total is 5.0. These teams met once already this season with the Canucks coming away with a 3-2 home win on October 30th. The teams split their two meetings a season ago with each winning on home ice.

End of a Grueling Road Trip
Today will be the finale of an excruciating 7-game in 12-day road trip versus Eastern Conference opponents for the Vancouver Canucks. They’ve gone a respectable 3-3 in the first 6-games of the trip. However, they’ve displayed a bit of wear and tear by losing their previous 2-games, 5-2 at Toronto on Saturday, and Sunday they squandered a 3-0 lead in a 4-3 loss at the hands of the Ottawa Senators. All in all, the Canucks have gone a terrific 9-4 against the money line on the road this season. One of the obstacles that the Canucks must overcome if they hope to continue their winning ways is having the ability to secure wins versus quality teams. They’ve gone a dismal 17-35 the past 3-seasons versus opponents with a winning record.

Been a Struggle Recently
The Montreal Canadiens return home from a 4-game road trip which saw them go 1-3. As a matter of fact, the Canadiens lost the last 3-games on that trip, and have gone a dismal 1-6 in their previous 7-games. Montreal has played 7 of their previous 8-games on the road. Tonight will mark the beginning of a 5-game in 12-day home stand for the Canadiens at the Bell Centre where they gone a very good 9-4 this season. An area of concern for the Canadiens has been their slow starts to games since the season began. They’ve been outscored by a wide margin of 26-9 in the first periods of their 29-games during the 2014-2015 NHL campaign.

NHL Totals Angle
As I alluded to earlier, the Canadiens have played their previous 4-games all on the road and the Canucks will be playing in their 7th consecutive away game this evening. The combination of those two occurrences has proven to produce low scoring games over the last 18-seasons. Below is a totals angle that supports that theory, and I will use that to my advantage when making my NHL picks for today.

Any team (Montreal) coming off 3 or more road games in a row, versus an opponent coming off 4 or more road games in a row, has seen 195 of those 309-games (63.1%) go under the total since 1996.
